It is usually included in the fee taken by the Advocate to do the conveyancing, you need to get your Police character reference from the Police of the country of citizenship yourself. In the UK that cost me £10, I applied by post and it took 42 days. A lot less time than the 'state' takes to process your application.

It doesn't cost anything to apply for permission to purchase if you do it yourself, the procedure is documented on the home buyers pressure group website http://www.hbpg-trnc.net/documents/purchase_apply.html - you may need their help to write the letter to accompany the application as it has to be quite specific. The form you need to get the police check is the 'subject access' form - looking on the internet it seems each police force has their own. It may be best to get a friend to go to the police station nearest to where you used to live to pick up a form and then send it out to you.

Hi I have just done this and they no longer do it at the Police Station you go onto a web site called Disclosure Scotland and do it on line it costs £25. THis information was given to me at my local police station and it took about 10 days to arrive.
