Hi

my wife and I just bought a place in Karsiyaka. We will be there in January-09 and wondered if there are any good places in the area to buy food, good restaurants etc. Also, are there any car hire places closer than Girne? And of course, are there any Cyprus44 members in our area? Being new, we will need a lot of advice.

Merry Christmas from

Marge and Thomas

Welcome, Thomarge. What restaurants did you visit prior to buying your place in Karsiyaka? Also what made you choose Karsiyaka as the place to live?

Good luck to you both in North Cyprus & welcome to the board.

Do we assume you will be holiday rather than residential?

Car hire companies will often pick you up from Ercan and you can often leave your car when you fly out for no charge either. The company we work with offer these services free of charge.

A superb Xmas to you and may 2009 bring all you desire and a little more.

Hi Thomas and Marg,

Welcome to the forum and to TRNC.

There are many supermarkets selling all sorts of food to meet all tastes and there is an abundance of good restaurants for you to explore and enjoy.

Try Sun rentacar or Green rentacar, both offer good rates and are not far from Karsiyaka.

Hi Thomas and Marge

I also live in Karsiyaka kind of behind Club Simena down towards the sea. As has been said before, the village restaurant which is next to the little shop on the corner of the olive oil factory road is excellent. Also, Sirin Yali which is a fish restaurant right by the sea. If you drive past the coffee shop at the square and keep going towards the sea you will find it. There are two mini-markets nearby, Hos Bes (technically Lapta but only just over the border) which has most things you need, and Yigit. The nearest car rental I know is at Green Garage which is also the nearest petrol station. There is a very good supermarket in Alsancak called Dolmaci (where all the locals shop) which has really good fresh fruit and veg and a good meat counter where the butcher speaks English. You will find it by turning right just as you get to Starling supermarket (heading towards Girne). The butcher in the square at Karsiyaka also sells very good meat.

Hi Jo,

Where is Dolmaci supermarket from the Starling supermarket on the coast road, near to PoolsRus, is it the one right up at the top of the road.

Thanks Hattie.

Thanks,

I am a little amazed that we received so many answers already. Thanks to one and all. We live in Norway, in a skiing community, with a lot of tourists of course but want to relocate to a warmer place when retiring. We have visited Cyprus a few times and fell in love with the island. The house in Karsiyaka was sort of a love at first sight,so we bought it, for the next couple of years it will be for holiday, until retirment, then we'll move lock, stock and barrel down there and become residential. This trip in February will be our first staying in our new home and not in a hotel, something we are really looking forward to. Hence the former question about restauarnats and shops. Any and all suggestions will be received with thanks.

Hello and Welcome!

Just a thought about the temperature if you've not Wintered in Cyprus before - it does get cold at night, so you'll need warmer clothes and an electric blanket would be sensible.

But it has to be warmer than Norway....

Hi Hattie, yes Dolmaci is the one at the top of the road on the right just past PoolsRUs. On Sunday afternoons it is jammed full of locals doing their shopping.

Hi Thomarge,

Welcome to the forum and to TRNC.

There are so many places to eat that you will be better off looking through previous postings on this forum.

Dont get a car near home because you still have to get from the airport. Sun and most others will meet your flight at the airport with your car and Sun give a discount to home owners of 25%. Used them lots of times with no problems.
