We have just arrived in North Cyprus and are 9 months pregnant. We would like everyone's opinion on Girne State hospital. Is the facility safe and is the staff competent in the event of complications? any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks

Yes the hospital and its staff are a hell of a lot better than in the UK. Have had to use it once and they couldnt have treated me any better in a private hospital in yhe UK.

Jesus the place is a shit hole! Hygiene levels were quoted in CT on Saturday, it would take years for this to get close to UK NHS standards

I would check if there is even a maternity unit in the hospital! If there is you need to go and meet the midwives, doctors and get booked in. In my opinion you have been a wee bit reckless arriving here at full term and not booked in somewhere. But good luck anywhere.

To the people who knock the NHS, think back to your childhood when medical care was there for you and your parents had no worries about finding the cash to pay for it. It can't have been that bad you are all still alive!

From a personal experience just recently, I was regularly going to the state hospital for check ups which was OK however, I waited (with other heavily pregnant women) for 2-4 hours to be seen in the hot corridors with other sick people, and when seen - I was seen with 2 others at the same time - not a personal one to one service as one might have expected. When I was 8 and a half months pregnant my labour started and I was sent to the birthing ward to have an examination. To my absolute horror, I was asked to lay down on a very old birthing table with styrups - where someone had obviously just given birth. There was blood on a mat on the floor just at the base of the table and the tray at the end (to catch blood and bodily fluids - you get the picture) was full of bloody tissues and rubber gloves as well as a bucket to the side of it also full of the same.

When I said to her that the table was very dirty - she said it's OK you dont sit in the tray!!

Here here Mrs Awful. Most Cypriots have caesarians so the focus here is not on natural childbirth

I obviously went private after that.

My experience may be a rare one so and cannot say that you would receive the same, however please do not expect glitz and glamour - cause you're not going to get it.

If you do decide to go private or state there will be a lot of blood tests that you are going to need to do which are not cheap. If you go private the birth itself will cost in excess of 2500tl.

Good luck.

Just my 2 cents (even though I,m not American).... But I wouldn't expect standards this low in any modern country. I went there for a minor emergency and the dingy room, with flickering strip light, stained sheets and dry blood spattered walls, were enough to make me leave before the "consultant" even returned. I have since given birth in the UK and would only ever consider medical care here in one of the private hospitals, which are worlds apart from the medieval facility that Girne calls its State Hospital. I,d hate to think of any woman having to give birth in that place!

Thanks to everyone for their answers. We are here for an emergent family situation and were shocked by the prices at over 3500tl from some of the hospitals. We have had our prenatal care and I have an extensive medical background so, I can appreciate the situation with the state hospital.

many mant local go to Turkey to give birth as the conditions and skills at Girne are lacking at the least. You could well come out with hiv HEP C OR TB .

ah the raw truth that is 'North Cyprus Health Care'

I must admit, we do have (some) excellent doctors & nurses here. However, if you want to be treated by THEM one must fork out ridiculous amounts of money. There is a serious hygiene issue here with regards to the state hospitals... i recently went to visit a friend @ the Lefkosa state hospital, who had just come out of minor surgery and must sadly admit that i was DISGUSTED with what i saw: Dirty surgical gloves, tissues/sanitizers covered in blood, swabs on the floor under the beds not to add the .. bins! well, i wont go into detail. TO ADD a male nurse later walks in and out of the rooms going through those very indescribable bins searching for 'something' - no gloves on and i specifically watched to see if he would wash his hands & use disinfectant as they are just in bottles on the sides as you walk along the corridor but he didnt! PLUS there was building works INSIDE the hospital in the ward with patients everywhere ...

continued:

Dust all over the place, i was there until around 7pm and it was still going on. I did approach the nurses and doctors who were all having a rest in the Nurses Room and they simply said it was not in there hands.

... I could go on but i wont. There is a lot at play here and something must be done about this!

It's so sad .. such a beautiful island ... no leadership. It really is a 'pirate' island. People seem to get away with almost anything out here. So, we are forced to pay for something better and go private.. well those who can. :(

..Sorry .. i would just like to add that i am sure there are also brilliant doctors and nurses in the state hospitals too.. in-fact i know there are and i mean no disrespect but their hard work and efforts are lost in what can only be described as 'a bloody mess'.

Thanks,

The information is much appreciated and the concerns are duly noted. We are shocked by the low standard of care in the state hospital and are looking in to another doctor and facility. Please keep the comments and suggestions coming.

i think it was 3500 tl. Each visit to see him cost 80 tl then there are blood tests on top of that if you need any. I know you can visit Sali in the private hospital but have him do the operation in the local hospital (if your wife is planning c section) much cheaper. Someone said to me before it was 500 but not sure if it was TL or sterling and she also said you needed to get someone to stay with your wife to help with her after care. Hope this helps

I work at Dogus IVF Centre in Lefkosa and they do private births and cesareans. I think it is 3,000TL for a natural birth or 4,000TL for a cesarean. The doctor is female and speaks English. I am giving birth there in June and would definitely recommend going to a private hospital for the safety and health of both you and your baby.

Give me a call if you need help - 0533 888 4086.

Take care

Thx Julie.

Hi Bazaar, thank you for your help,i went to Dr.Sali yesterday at his clinic,he gave me the choice to deliver either there 2500 tl or the state hospital 1000tl.Before,we went and visited the delivery section at the state hospital,we didn't notice any difference between there and some of the private hospitals we v visited. The nurses were very helpfull and the rooms big and fully equipped, even for the premies. One thing that concerns me is that the doc told us that my husband wouldn't be allowed in the delivery room with me either at his clinic or the states :(

As far as i know there is only 1 Dr here on the island who will let the father in at the delivery. If you want more info e-mail me on trnchealthcare@gmail.com and in the meantime I will try to find out the prices for you.

Dr Sali looked after me very well during a difficult pregnancy and delivered my daughter by c section she's now nearly 7. He is a very nice man and gave me confidence during a difficult time. It is not normal for the husband to be present at the birth. But he will be with you before and there when you wake up. To be honest you will be asleep and it makes no difference. There are many things that you will find to be different please do not try to compare as you will be forever frustrated or upset. The birth is the easy part. Relax make a decision and go for it.

Ill give you a call nurseawful, thank you.

Hi Mermaid,im going for a natural birth, not a c section, and yes Dr Sali left a very good impression, especially by the fact that he didn't put any pressure on us to go c section or private-we faced a lot of pressure from other doctors here for a c section-.I can make the effort and go through it without my husband but it would be nice if he can spend the first night with me in the hospital knowing that the visiting hours finish at 19.00.

We recently had a baby at Girne Ozel Hastane. It ended up a c-section even though my wife was set on a natural birth. As the baby was 2 weeks late the doctor (in a private clinic in Lefkosia) insited that we go immediatley to the mentioned hospital as the baby was stressed. Of course we weren't in a position to argue so we did as instructed. We drove straight to the hospital and 20 mins later our daughter was born. Everything was very sudden but all went smoothly.

The bill however was not what we were quoted and ended up at 3850TL. It was a cash payment and I asked for a receipt but was never given one. The usual passing the buck type of answers were given at reception. Just make sure you get the price WRITTEN down prior to delivery.

Good luck anyway !

madhouse914, I would never consider to give birth in any state hospital in North Cyprus. I am 7 months pregnant and I go to a private doctor in Nicosia, his name is Munur Sago, he really is a good doctor. I am planning to have a natural birth too, not a C section. My birth will be in Cyprus Life Hospital 2 (old Medikent hospital) and my doctor said it is 3000 TL for natural birth.
