I am pretty sure you will find it will scratch/rub off very easily, melamine is a non-porous surface so nothing for pain to key into.

What is the correct paint then to use on melamine?

I will need to varnish it then.

Re: Msg 3,

There is a special paint to use on melamine: in the UK it is called Cupboard Paint (Dulux) or Cupboard Makeover Paint (Crown). I used the Crown's one, which is very good.

Have a look in Marshall paint shop in Girne for the equivalent.
