But Graham Cluley, senior consultant with security firm Sophos, said no browser is exempt from problems.

"Firefox has issued patches and Apple has too. Whichever browser you are using you have to keep it up to date,"

"People have to be prepared and willing to install security updates. That nagging screen asking if you want to update should not be ignored," he said.

Quite right Nige.

The amount of PC's I get to see where Updates is turned off or they are ready to install from months ago.

People out there, learn one lesson, ALWAYS INSTALL UPDATES!!!!!

Most problems would not have happened if the computer was up to date.

Another important lesson is the internet is not a safe place no matter what browser you use. I always remember my bank trying to convince me to use internet banking. "We have the latest security installed", my answer is so what!! Have all the clients (including mine) a secure system. I think not!! I wish I had a pound for every keylogger I have found on clients systems. Hacking is so easy now days because most people do not understand what is happening in the background and what is connecting to the internet everytime they do. I would not even plug in my modem with a firewall installed. I guanantee you will be hacked in under 2 minutes (not by me I would like to add).

RE AndyP, msg 5 : (...) People out there, learn one lesson, ALWAYS INSTALL UPDATES!!!!! (...)

===> Bad advice again, AndyP. You should have written: "People out there, learn one lesson, ALWAYS INSTALL UPDATES!!!!! - after a couple of days, when YOU HAVE READ IN THE APPROPRIATE INTERNET FORUMS WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH THE PATCH/UPDATE/UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!!".

Dutch

What is your problem? Better to install an update than not!

After all, on another thread you made it clear that most users do not know anything, so do you expect them to start going round reading forums about updates?

After all 90% of updates can be removed. Anyway, why you giving advice when you use a Mac unlike 99% of the people on this forum.

RE msg 11, AndyP : (...) What is your problem? Better to install an update than not!

===> I don't believe this. I'm glad that you're only a moderator on this board and not an IT manager in critical surroundings.

(...) After all, on another thread you made it clear that most users do not know anything, so do you expect them to start going round reading forums about updates?

===> You're right, keep 'em stupid, so your star can shine.

(...) After all 90% of updates can be removed. Anyway, why you giving advice when you use a Mac unlike 99% of the people on this forum. (...)

===> 90% etc. You tell that to people who usually don't even know what, where and how they installed new software! And why wouldn't I - a Mac-user - give some advice? I think I used DOS-running PC's when you were still at school (or you must update your avatar...)

Dutch for info I have been employed as an IT Manager who looked after the networks in 9 Countries within Europe for a Global Company and sat on the IT Strategy Board for the Group. So yes I do know what I am talking about thank you very much.

I do not make my posts on here for the likes of the IT know it all that you obviously are. I make my posts to help the people who do not know what they are doing. Some of which are my clients.

As you state in your last msg "keep 'em stupid, so your star can shine" is that how you look after people that put food on your table? My star will always shine due to customer care etc etc.

If you are still stuck in the days of DOS perhaps you should retire and let the new blood take over!

Anyway, only repling because I don't really give a monkies what you think. If the other forum members think my advice is a s**t as you say it is, I can always stop posting and they can all come to you.

Oh BTW, not saying non of this because I am a mod!

I always install updates but then about 3 days later my pc will not start up.

So it tells me to do a system restore which removes the updates.

Any ideas?

I can vouch for the fact that in real ife Andy looks just like his avatar... and that Hans looks like a grumpy little wizard... which is what I think he is...

Don't get him started on Technology for the esoterically inclined... or we'll be back to Betamax Video and Discovision or Laserdisc....

If you have auto updates switched on you should be OK. But best to be safe than sorry and download the patch for IE anyway.

You must have some big space issues on your PC. Double click on My Computer and see what free space you have on your drives. Got to be bad news if you cannot save 7mb file. Looks like it's time to do a bit of housekeeping!!

I installed Firefox but it won't produce acceptable pages for some sites like the VO site and Nationwide Bank's site stopped working.. in that you could see it but not do much. Yet it was fine in IE...

Any thoughts Andy?

Nige,

1) with Firefox running, CLOSE the tabs that you do not want, leaving just the tab displaying the homepage that you DO want.

Then repeat the process of Tools, Options, Main, show my homepage, use current pages.

2) Tell us how you got on!

Keith.
