Cannot help you specifically Mrs Butler as I am in the West but local porridge oats come in a yellowy coloured box called Lifalif. You can also buy Jordan's oats in my local shops but they are expensive (approx 9TL). I've never seen dried mushrooms but then I haven't looked for them.

Supreme have oats with the cereals. I bought some last time I was there. Also the large supermarket over the mountains towards the airport, think it is called Eruklu has oats. Don't know about the mushrooms though, but I have a feeling I have seen them somewhere!

Erdener sell Jordan's Jumbo and Smooth and Creamy. Supreme sometimes have Scott's and most places including Sarac, in Esentepe, have Yulaf, that's the Turkish name for oats. You could also try Blue Dream supermarket too. Haven't seen dried mushrooms though - we get them brought over from UK.

Hi all, Thanks for all your replies, I have looked in most of the supermarkets mentioned for both porridge oats and the mushrooms but have not found them. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place for the mushrooms?? The porridge oats should be with the cereals but every supermarket seems to be out of them at the moment. I will look for Yulaf in Sarac tomorrow. Thanks again. The butlers wife

I saw dried mushrooms in Erdener about a week ago, with the fresh mushrooms outside in small bags. Ask the fruit/veg man in there as he will know where they are. I don't think they were normal mushrooms though, i think they were chinese or something and they were quite expensive.

I have bought Scotts, Quaker and Jordans instant porridge oatsfrom time to time from Erdener, Supreme and the old Tempos in Girne. But it is the usual problem - the stores do not restock until the shelves are empty so you get temporary shortages. Best to bulk buy when you find them - but decant into glass storage with good tight lids. The old Tempos are best at keeping the traditional British foods in stock - but tend to be pricey. Yulaf are coarser than instant oats - excellent for cooking and soups etc. - not so good if you want a quick bowl of porridge in the cold mornings.

Thanks Mrs G. I'm sure Jordan's is about 9.99TL on the West side so that is a great price.

I bought some dried mushrooms in Tempo - Çatalköy and they weren't very nice. After soaking, the "stock" was fine for flavouring, but the mushrooms, despite a long slow simmer, remained very unpleasantly rubbery.

Re porridge, I've only managed to find Yulaf recently (in Supreme) but it's fine. I like mine made with milk (4 mins in microwave) and mashed banana or chopped apple/pear.
