I am aware that many banks in Turkey will charge you "transfer fee" for paying any money into someones account from another branch. Ishbank used to do the same. I kicked up a big fuss about it about 15-20 years ago, they waived the charges but I continued to protest and they changed their policy in Cyprus.

A friend in Girne wanted to day to pay money to my account in Famagusta and they wanted to charge him a fee. Eventually they waived the charges but that is not good enough. The local banks never charge under similar circumstances. Be warned.

Yes be warned, it has also happened to me, I too was incensed and was about to close my account in protest when good sense won the day. But waiving a fee is not enough. There should be no fee in the first place. Paying cash into someone elses account, even at a different branch of the same bank should be just another transaction. The minute the cash enters the system, the bank has use of that cash and since it is into a current account, they do not even have to pay interest for the privilege, how greedy to expect to be paid too I have a Premier account with them both here and in the UK.

The fee they asked of me was 31 lira.

The funny thing is that with HSBC I can transfer money to anywhere in the world up to 200,000 dollars a month through internet at no cost at all. In fact I send money to China quite often this way although the sums involved are much lower. So I know for a fact that I pay no charges for that. So why bother with such petty charges?

I have to say that the attitude from some of the banks here come across that they are not bothered about customer service, nor If you deposit with them.

I shopped around a week ago, 3 different banks said that they would call me with their best package/Interest rate for a large sum investment, they didnt even bother....

I called into the switched on Girls at Iktisatbank, Girne branch, all done and dusted in 5 Mins and at a very good rate.

It's because he doesn't pay his speeding fines that he's got so much loose cash to flash about Gerry!

Birdman and Groucho,

What I can and what I do are two separate things. How about the part "...the sums involved are much lower."

Anyway I get the point, the less I pay in speeding fines the more I save. How true. You should do the same somehow.

Sylvie,

On HSBC page the fees are there e.g.:

3rd Person Money Transfer From Teller to Account

Same branch free

Different branch 0.5% + 30 TL, maximum 250 TL

So this is their policy in Turkey and Cyprus but none of the local banks and some Turkish banks in Cyprus charge for this. Should they not follow the advice "when in Rome do as the Romans do" ? Its up to them but I will never agree to pay such a fee. They are welcome to continue with their policy.

The inconsistencies here are very confusing, for instance you can transfer money from Creditwest to any TRNC Bank, including HSBC, but it if you transfer to a uk Bank, take out a mortgage to cover the costs (but be very careful with your choice of bank for that mortgage) there is sometimes a small charged levied by another (local)bank to transfer within the TRNC banking system. Wouldn't it make more sense for Central Bank to govern the scale of charges and that it be mandatory that they all charge the same?

No, I believe in liberal economy. There should be competition and this means no fixed charges. So if HSBC makes a charge for this service, I do not use them. Indeed I use them only for internet banking and also I use their "Liquid Funds" because it suits me best. It earns me overnight interest but I can convert it to cash any moment I want. I never know when somebody will call for help, so this way I am always ready.
