Hi I have a PAYG chip from sim plus by turkcell. I would like to change it to a contract and keep the same number. Is this possible? If so any idea how I go about it? thanks Mick

Yes all you need to do is go into the shop by the main roundabout in Girne. You need to see one of the staff members that sit at the back of the shop (there is a numbering system) and take your passport. They will fill in forms, you sign and Bob's yer uncle! They will automatically put you on the most basic tariff and after a month or so, if you are making loads of calls then the tariff can be changed.

I want to do this and I want to pay for it via the bank - direct debit or equivalent - do you get a paperbill or something to give to the bank, as with the electricity bill?

they text you the bill amount and you can have it via email but to get the paper bill sent to you it may be like my credit card bill which tends to arrive after the date you need to pay. not sure if you can do a standing order but some banks now charge for you to pay your mobile phone bills. mine charge 1tl per bill now. if it is difficult to go to a turkcell shop to pay you can pay online via your debit or credit card which is very simple.

If you do decide to go with Turkcell, ask about some of their packages and have in mind how much you would normally spend on your monthly telephone as it is. I was pleasantly surprised when I went in and asked to find that if I changed to one of their packages it would save me 50 plus TL a month. It is worth asking about.

You don't need a bill to pay at the bank, Turkcell will text you the amount together with the date it has to be paid. Just give the bank your phone number and they do the rest.Turkcell will then send you a "thank you" text later that day.

For a year now I've been on the 2020 package ie. provided you call other Turkcell numbers, you had "free" calls one weekday and one weekend day - Turkcell stipulated which days. My bill seemed to be getting larger not smaller, until it was pointed out to me that my TEXTS are now proportionally more expensive than normal. If something appears to be too good to be true, then it usually is!!

2020 isn't a package but an option open to everyone even PAYG. you text 2020 and state 2 days in the message and you get 2 free days that week to call other turkcell numbers. the cost per text to send to 2020 is 3tl so if you do it for 4 weeks thats 12tl. i don't know how many kontor it costs on PAYG. if you text a lot i have a package that enables me to have free text messages to anywhere. it was 10000 but they have changed it, i think it is 9500 to local and 500 international but it is still more than i can use so a good deal if you are a constant texter. it costs around 12tl a month. just ask in the shop for the exact details.

Re message 10 "Just give the bank your phone number and they do the rest". For info, I pay my bill through CreditWest. We had to fill in standing order forms (only needs doing once to cover any standing orders you may want to set up) and pay stamp duty. The first 2 months were a bit dodgy with the bills not being paid on time but it seems to have settled down now.
