What if you purchased a car and didnt realise it was stolen, would you still be taken to Court for theft or would you get your money back?

What if you purchased a property in TRNC and didnt realise it belonged to the Greeks, would you still be accused of theft and get your money back>?

If you purchase a stolen car not knowing, the police will take it from you, you get no compensation. All you can do is report to them who sold it to you. And pursue that person to recover the money you paid them.

Message 13.....exactly! thats what I was getting at in Message 1....about buying property in TRNC and the article in Cyprus Today on Wednesday, about the Greeks making more claims about the British stealing their land.

What if we didnt know we were buying on stolen land cos the lawyers here said its all legal!!!

Will we be chucked out? What affects owners if they dont have deeds yet.

Very confusing.

msg 14,if you beleive in what you are saying then you'd only be fooling yourself.Particularly if you are from uk.

Of course, there is always the issue of 'trnc' not being recognised!

So,simply no one will take any notice of your 'claim'.

The british foreign office says

Property owners and potential purchasers should also consider that a future settlement of the Cyprus problem could have serious consequences for property they purchase (including the possible restitution of the property to its original owners).

If you take control (purchase) any property knowing it to be stolen then you can be charged with a number of offences contrary to the Theft Act 1968, 1978 and a few others that followed.

If you purchase property in good faith and pay a fair price for it and it is later found to be stolen then there is a procedure involving a person called the interpleader who decides who ownes the property. In some cases the new owner who paid a fair price keeps the property whilst the old owner usually an insurance company is considered more able to survive the loss.

Above based on my own experiance.

Whilst ever the IPC is in operation there will not be a problem for those that have bought GC homes and land. The real problem will come when the IPC disbands or GC's do not get their desired compensation package, thus allowing them to appeal to ECHR. The views of the ECHR have never wavered so there is the risk that more people will be in a similar position to the Oram's or end up with some sort of financial penalty.

Currently the GC Government are shooting themselves in the foot by doing all they can to prevent their citizens from using and recognising the IPC. A much better tactic would have been to flood the IPC with claimants knowing that Turkey could/will not possibly pick up the cost of compensation, rendering it ineffective. Indeed Turkey is doing itself no favours dragging its feet in paying the compensation already agreed by the IPC.

Only time will tell what the consequences of buying stolen property will be.

|My son in law is a farmer and whilst I was in the UK last year I picked up his copy of Farmer's Weekly, there was a big article by the NFU (National Farmer's Union) Insurance Company. It said "Can we have our tractors back?") They had tracked stolen, modern tractors to Northern Cyprus and wanted them back

Bet they did not get a reply though!
