But how long would the battery last unless you built in a solar charger as well? It is the ringing of a mobile which uses its battery. Good idea in principle though and the Chinese can manufacture anything!

Yes the Chinese do manufacture anything. Isnt there something you put on a car to know which area it is if you are trying to track it down.

GPS - Global positioning system works , er globably. However GPS can only show where the GPS device is (anywhere on the globe). To get that information from a GPS reciver needs some other technology that can send information, like mobile phone. I have not looked at the linked dog collars, but I suspect they use both GPS, to establish where the dog is and then mobile phone tech to send that information from the dog collar to the owner. So the GPS part is global and will work anywhere. The other mobile phone part will be 'local' and need a 'local' mobile phone provider.

Ok looking at the products in the link in post 4, it would seem they use GPS to give the dogs location and then a 'walky talky' type of system to send that to a reciver that the owner has. THis would work in the TRNC but the limit of such a system is that you the owner have to be within 7 miles of the dog for the 'walky talky' signal to reach you and that is going by the 'sales blurb'. I suspect in reality the range is a lot less than this in many real world senarios.

http://www.pawtrax.co.uk/main/ This one uses the mobile phone network and says you 'can use your own sim' so in theory this should work in the TRNC using a telsim or turkcell sim card and mobile phone account but I would email the sellers and ask specificaly about use in the TRNC. It would also work in the TRNC with a UK sim card with the relevant romaing contract but the mobile phone charges might be excessive using it this way.
