Mike the WAFU's earlier post gave me the impression that there are one or two here or perhaps swallows who are ex matelots on this forum.

So come on pipe up wings be it you were stokers, greenies, scablifters, jack dustys, bunting tossers, dabtoes, scribes, jenny wrens, crushers or even worse rat fink tiffs or wafus!

Let's swing the lamps about the Andrew in Jack Speak. Me in brief, Vincent boy, greenie, Victorious, Centaur, Whale Island, Grenville, Whale Island, Torquay and the odd stay in Collingwood, RNB Victory & Jagos Mansion but not a Janner a Pompey rating through and through. Ring a ding ding P-O-M ring a ding P-E-Y.

Stand fast Bootnecks, Pongos and Raffy Chappies.

Greetings loobie444 with your service dates our paths must have crossed at some stage, I hope you get your wishes to spend more time here. Maybe at some stage we'll have a beer can't promise you a CSB though but I'm sure a 'Jack Dusty' would know where to find an alternative.

Good Luck Townie.

Amen to that, as an ex booty I was always a little ashamed to have RN on my ID card !! I don't know about 'Senior Service', we just thought of you as the 'Taxi Service' that delivered us to where we needed to get to !!

At last some banter! Goodness me Royal, a Bootneck that can read, do you have a pal that helped you to write this too!

Not Big Mart though, I do know he struggles with joined up writing, probably not Cinders either he's out spoiling a walk somewhere. If you can read, you were probably a bandsman, Cymbals was it Royal?

In any event, I'm glad you escaped from Poole Harbour it was a bit shallow for the taxi service to get in. (Or was it from the RM school of music?)

Count me in for the RN list - I was a 'bubble head' by trade (Clearance Diver to the unitiated). Sadly, not a field gunner (but understand where the 'slat No 7' comes from as I used to be surrounded by ex-field gun rates from the late 80's / early 90's).

Hoşgeldın CD Jonah Msg 10.

Looking to loobie444 to find some CSB or close to it so maybe a couple of wets at some stage. A couple of pals who ran and then played in the mud on the foreshore, Paul (Dusty) Miller, John (No-nose) Pennington and Friar Tuck, you may know them? PFGC guys from the late 60's early 70's still turning to though.

Good luck townie.

The merchant navy does not serve the Queen or the Government (just their private companies) so they are not in the 'Service' as the RN/Army and RAF are. Not to be confused with the Royal Fleet Auxillary who support the Armed Forces but are civil servants (unions and all!!).

Unfortunately CSB (Courage Sparkling Bitter) was phased out when modern tinned beer (with foaming units) was found to travel well at sea. Shame 'cos CSB had a much higher alcoholic content than normal keg beers and was actually a really good pint!!

look forward to having a beer sometime, negotiating with the NAAFI before a deployment trying to get a few freebie extra barrels of CSB brings back great memories

Jonesy299 I bet that was a popular decision to scrap CSB almost as popular as scrapping our bubbly I would suspect, anyway good to see loobie444 is on the case. Good on yer.

Slats, why not join us Bootnecks at our next re-union, thats if you can stick the pace, we have a couple of \matelots with us. 2 or 3 or more hours of swigging a few wets and talking bollocks as a matelot you would fit in well with that.!!!!!!

but the Merchant Navy does/did serve Queen and Country in times of war. Thousands of seamen have perished manning unarmed merchant vessels. MN has been known as the "Fourth Service"

Royal Marine re-union on Wednesday 7th March at 2.30pm (1430 for Matlots!) in the "Red Lion Alsancac.

Dabtoes welcome, talking of which, I was chatting with one this week and he didn't understand it when I informed him that the "Golden Eagle had shit on me" this week with my pussers pension !

How's about that for "Jack" (not) speak ? LMBO

Oh dear swyflot, cinders and birdman, we weren't expecting you, however, as you are here, kindly take up a position well astern of the flotilla. Display no unnecessary lights, deploy a lifebouy ghost and maintain strict radio silence please. There's good chaps, oh and do try to keep station we don't want you getting lost do we?

doddies Msg 22 I am grateful for your post, brave men indeed and not forgotten but probably frequently overlooked. As you say a very important but 4th service.

Cinders I'm considering your invitation and being a matelot I can talk bollocks with the best of them. I'm thinking about the travel logistics and will probably involve someone we both know! Hopefully see you on the 7th but Cinderella leave because of the pooh machine.

Clearly rejela Msg 27 has difficulty with Matelots terminology, here is a link to 'Jack Speak' that might help.

However, the page it opens carries a warning that some of the content may include irreverent, improper and sexist language so if you are easily offended do not open this page and sling yer hook.

This is another link compiled by an RN wife and much more politically correct but a bit tame.

Last paragraph rejela Msg 27 re my Msg 7 ..... you are a man outstanding in your field..... stay there I'll give a shout when to come back.

PS Our grandfathers were all at The Somme together and by some miracle returned to dear old Blighty.
