After the Turkish intervention in Cyprus (the 1974 Peace Operation) the names of towns, villages, hamlets etc were changed from Greek to Turkish. This is often confusing for expats and even more so is the correct spelling of the old and new names. Greek names can be spelled in several ways, but Turkish names can not.

Here you find an overview of the correct spelling of all Turkish place names and their old names - some people may find it handy, I hope...

I forgot to add that the names above can easily be located on the latest (update 1.8) version of my "Tourist map of Northern Cyprus". The first version was 1.0, which was available on print some six years ago.

If there's any interest for a free copy of this map version 1.8 I'll make the map available for downloading.

Write a post in this thread and I'll reply with the download link.

If you need to speak with any officials on the other side, it is always good to know the Greek name for your village.

9 pm.

Only 13 interested people - I had expected more requests for the map.

1 : If you have your email address in your profile you'll receive an email with the download link.

2 : If I can't find your email address you'll have to email me first at mcf.trnc@gmail.com .

Interesting. Your map has Catalkoy as much the same spelling - old and new.

Google, and other maps, suggest it was called Agios Epikitos. Any idea which is correct?

@ msg 25, iceman: Yes, I found some errors and typos myself also. I'll correct them - and make the free map with corrections available also. Thank you, iceman, for your interest and fine help. It's always nice to see interest in things TRNC from a Cypriot Turk.

@ msg 1: I've taken the list with old/new place names in TRNC off line awaiting my corrections. I'll have the corrected list checked by the TRNC Mapping Department in Nicosia and will then upload the authorised list again.

@ msg 27, iceman: See above in this post.

@ msg 28, kathsj: No problem. I received some emails with a request for the free map also and will take care of all emailed requests.
