Interesting table.

I wonder if the entry for Northern Ireland will lead to any howls of protest???

I note that we in "Southern Ireland" speak only English while the Scots speak Gaelic and the Welsh speak Welsh!

90+ years of compulsory Irish lessons in schools hasn't been too successful then.

All you are doing is demonstrating your ignorance of the Engish language in a most childish way. Either learn the language or shut up. For your information:

The suffix -ish means like, almost like, similar to. It is most common with color adjectives: yellowish, whitish, blackish, reddish, grayish, ...

It is added to some nouns: womanish, mannish, girlish, boyish, shrewish, oafish, boorish, elfish, impish, foolish, clownish, snobbish, prudish, hellish, devilish, mulish, freakish

It is used to form nationality or ethnic group names in a very few cases: Flemish, Danish, Finnish, Spanish, Jewish, Yiddish

It is also a verb suffix related to the Romance language "ir" verbs: furnish, banish, punish, diminish, replenish, brandish, vanish, embellish, ... (Here it does not mean like or similar.)

In many cases it is not a suffix, but part of the root of the word. radish, rubbish, dish, fish, fetish, parish, wish

As I understand it, as to "why the 'ish'?" at end of ethnic group names, it is all about defining a relationship with an ethnic group - but not all. This is due to historical "accident" of whatever linguistic origin that was absorbed into English. So, we have Indi(an) instead of Indish because "ian" has a Latin origin whereas "ish" is Germanic.

Just to confuse things we then have an even greater "grouping" by the use of "Germanic" and "Turkic".

One of the linguistic fantasies I have is to try out the theory that I could travel from Bulgaria to China and still have some of my Turkish utterings understood

I support Yorg's enquiry in that it is a perfectly valid and interesting question.

It is a question born out of ignorance of the language couched in his usual sneering tone.

You obviously understand that English is made more complicated by the various origins, Latin, French, German, Indian, American English coming back on us and many others.

One of the things that has happened is that the grammatical constructs have been muddled up over time. French grammar on Old German words and vice versa.

OK setpot but I wonder if one can justify being so harsh on the matter. I am sure Yorg is perfectly capable of asking this himself but I take it you can speak Turkish as well as he can speak English?

The good thing about the discussion is that a useful explanation was recorded for lots of others who may have wondered about the same thing.

Sadly, the astonishing arrogance seen here only serves to perpetuate some of the myths about the "Ingiliz".

setpot; Msg. 16. My message is in perfect English. It was clearly not directed at any specific person. You might need to concentrate on improving your English
