Does anybody know of any metalworker who has fire grates for our open fireplace. Want to try to buy one off the shelf rather than get one made. In TRNC end march through april

Hi ours is actually up at Amanda's Auction Room in Ozankoy due to go in the Auction 4 March. If you are interested we could let you have it cheaper than the Price they have it up for, they are asking £35, but are are open to an offer.

I have always found Wooden Logs to burn more controlled and with a far better heat output to the room if burned on a solid flat bed, when burned on a grate with an uncontrolled airflow, the burn is uncontrolled and most of the heat goes straight up the flue, additionally causing more draughts in the room, 1st chouce is of course is a wood burning stove where you have complete control of the fire.

Abandoned mine after a month or so. As Dillon said in msg 9, far better to burn logs on the flat of the hearth.

Have a log burner fitted now, even better.

Tony, msg 13,

Is your log burner fitted into your fireplace and if so how do you find it, heat wise ? Thanks.

it is also easier to clean out the ashes without a grate

Hi Eamonn, yes it's fitted into the fireplace. It is more efficient than an open fire as not so much heat goes up the chimney. It can be used with the door open or closed. You can adjust the air intake to make it burn longer, like an all-night burner. It was fitted by Akinlar. They are between Lefkoşa roundabout and Bellapais traffic lights. They have a wide range of burners and will visit to make sure you get what you need. They leave everything clean and tidy.

I agree with all of the postings re not using a grate and I would add that you would benefit from not cleaning the ashes out but lay the logs on the old ashes and you will get a more controlled burn. Also if you want to keep the fire in overnight then go for a walk and collect a few pine cones to put on the fire to keep it burning slowly overnight.

Experienced users will know, there are so many different factors that will effect the efficient burn of an open fire, feeding just enough air that doesn’t cause draughts in a room while ensuring all the noxious fumes do in fact go up the flue while directing the heat into the room, and so very annoying while enjoying the warmth and comfort of an open fire to endure the balloon of smoke and fumes every time someone entered the room causing a backdraught from the flue, it was a bit of hit and miss affair in Victorian times and but today, burning solid fuel is almost an exact science.

I found this publication that I thought informative for anyone considering an open wood fire, I also think it would be a good idea to install a CO² and smoke detector in the same room.
