If you find a property with a properly built fireplace in TRNC you've 'struck gold' - none of them are designed to light a fire in and the builders have never heard of 'fire bricks'!

Brings back memories to me too, all the heat went up the chimney or if windy filled the room with smoke. That was a rented place. Decided against one when we got own place. They look lovely in the advertising pictures but most are not functional unless you spend time and money sorting out problems.

We gave the fireplace 'major surgery' and installed a wood burner with a flue extending partly up the chimney - far enough so the heat doesn't cause the cheap, rubbishy, wafer-thin wall bricks [that all the chimneys are made of] to disintegrate and end up as a heap in the fireplace as happened when we tried to light a fire in the original fireplce. Quite right - the room usually fills with smoke, even with a revolving extractor fitted on top of the chimney - useless, because a properly designed and built chimney, as we know it, is built with proper materials and extraction.

Obviously, MSG 1 doesn't have much knowledge about TRNC/RoC 'construction' methods, or the 'dump it and run', so called 'builders' that slap up these hastily and shoddily built 'concrete tents'!
