"So where should the fuel depot go? " How about, somewhere where the fuel is for? All they want to do is store it here because it is unacceptable elsewhere.... It will do untold harm to a fragile area of outstanding natural beauty...

Let the TCs decide. This is, after all, their country.

Im sure the reaction would be very different if it was going to be located in Karsiyaka/lapta coast or vicinity. For once I m seeing something I've never seen before, people not wanting to interfere. If it does happen, and the beaches get messed up plus the smell, lets see if people think the same way then,. message 5-6, I am a TC and there are TC's on this board too. Groucho thanks, you see the real picture.

Msg 7 - so, you and other TCs choose. Why should I, as a non-TC, stipulate what should or should not be built here? It is not my country and I have no vote. I disapprove of many things here, rubbish everywhere, property corruption, higher prices for non-TCs to name but a few. However, petitioning via this forum will not change anything.

Mess.8 you don't have to stipulate etc etc, but you can support your friends if you believe what they want is right. I signed the petition, because several of my TC and Turkish friends hoped I would and because I do not want to see Buncefield situation here. Apart from the damage to people and nature etc., the infastructure would not be able to cope at all. Just imaging it!!!! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk/4517962.stm

Newscoop "the TRNC is desperate for foreign investment " Yes it is... but one sure fire way to make sure it doesn't get sustainable investment is to turn a beautiful place that relies on tourism into a blighted area. You (as in, people in general) need to understand that a short-term influx of money that goes to very few people - like this project (a get rich quick scheme if ever there was) damages the prospects of many more people and is not a well thought out strategy... I think we all know safety standards are well below par here and even countries with much higher standards have problems with big storage depots... imagine the harm to a fragile ecosystem if there is a big spill, blast, fire, or oil all over the beaches of Cyprus... it would spread around the island like wildfire and then who would be happy? If somebody's palm is greased to get this through - Çok ayıp!

Msg 9. So other TCs do want it. Who is right or wrong? Our views are just that, nothing more.

cont... whilst, I wholly agree with the sentiment 'let Cypriots decide' I'm not convinced the population of Cyprus is being given much say in the matter - one gets the impression that they don't want it but are not being consulted in the same way as a public enquiry would get for such a scheme elsewhere in the world. Money talks - if you ask a loaded question like 'do you want jobs', 'do you want investment' the answer would be yes. If you asked 'do you want a potential ecological disaster on your doorstep in exchange for some short-term gain for a few people but with the risk of long-term problems...' I'm not so sure the answer would be the same.

Groucho - 100% share your view. I recall the furore of locals in the Haverford West area, however, the refinery went ahead despite the strong opposition. M3 bypass of Winchester yet another example of peoples' wishes being ignored for the 'greater good.' There will be similar examples here too. The ruling rich will support any proposal that enhances their fortune - its the same the world over. However, my point was the TCs should decide and expats views on a forum such as this will not change anything.

Tom, not all members of this board are expats, and raising awareness of such issues might make a small difference if Cypriots start asking 'why are we not being consulted?' and 'just who is it who stands to gain?' and 'what numpty thinks it's a good idea to house such a facility in an area the Government claim they have a tourism agenda for?'

Groucho, I am aware that there are non-TC users on CY44. Raising awareness is a valid reason for exposing such madness (my personal view). However, the TC media is a much better medium for doing this - if the owners of such outlets are not somehow complicit in the deal (cynical view)? Tourism agenda. If there is such a thing, ridding the beaches, picnic areas, mountains, places of interest et al of rubbish might be a start. Then sorting out the many eye-sores of fly tipping builders rubble in ravines - however if the TCs want their country to look like this, sobeit.
