I never hear bird song in Cyprus and, being a countryman, I miss the dawn and evening chorus. I have a thrush and a couple of robins in my garden and I see many skylarks about but they never sing as they do in the UK. Anybody know why?

We get birdsong in Karsiyaka. Lovely to listen to but just not as many birds as in my native, country area. Over the last 3 or 4 nights we have just picked out the sound of the Nightjar. A long loud purring trill. As it's name suggests it is a nocturnal bird. I wondered whether they were just visitors/migrating or whether they belong here and breed here. In 9 years I have never heard them before.

Looking forward to them coming. Beautiful creatures! They really do snatch bees right out of the air, absolutely fascinating to watch. Anyone ever seen a Hoopoo here?

We have some wrens who live in the shrubbery in our garden and they sing every morning and chatter away all day unless it is raining. Looking forward to the swifts and swallows returning next month, love to watch them skimming the pool for bugs and the occassional drink. The butlers wife

Why Don't The Birds Sing Here? Because they didn't apply for a permit / 'pay' the right official / submit the tunes to be whistled in triplicate for approval first.

I heard a nightingale in our garden at dusk this week. Haven't heard or seen one for years here. Also have not seen hoopoes for many years or the Cyprus roller. Hoopoes like lemon groves as do nightingales, and there used to be many of them in the groves in Catalkoy. April is normally the month to see them.

Went to the British High Commission last Friday, there were several Golden Oriels singing in the lrge trees, they are passing through at the moment and there song is so so beautiful and clear The males are bight yellow and black, the females are more of a Greenish yellow but they too are shy birds. They like mature orchards and gardens and perch high up. Again the locals like to eat them which is sad as there is plenty of other food available in the shops.

Unfortunately, ALL songbirds and migratory birds qualify as 'ambeliopoula' [Gk.] in Cyprus - north or south - the annual slaughter is horrendous, again unfortunately, impossible to police or eradicate. Don't forget - a Cyp believes he needs an auto-loading, repeater, double barrel 12 bore shotgun to shoot a sweet little garden Robin. What are such people? They should bloody well play 'Paintball' WITH EACH OTHER - USING THEIR HUNTING GUNS!

Jovial John, thankyou for that, it made me feel quite homesick. I live in North Yorkshire in the UK, middle of nowhere and the birdsong is incredible. Woodpeckers tapping, and mistle thrushes and skylarks, then the cuckoo. I have to say it is something I have really missed. Agree wholeheartedly with msg 23. But my family (countryfolk) love pheasant, grouse and partridge. Venison is also on the menu once a year!

John, I think your birds must all be living in ex Greek owned nests and are just keeping their beaks down!!!!

The landowner has re-mortgaged their nest and they are not too happy about it and don't feel like singing.

Terry, We see Hoopoes and Rollers every year here... best place for Rollers is the run into the Karpas. Hoopoes love derelict land they can scratch about in for invertebrates, Dipkarpas is a good place to see them also the forest roads around Akdeniz.
