Don't go there. They do not have the necessary expertise for such surgery to always be sucessful. My wife fell and seriously broke her hip here two years ago, within one year she was having it done again in UK and the first operation was described by the UK Specialist as "A complete abomination". Nothing fitted properly and the items used were all the wrong size.

I only know of one person who had a joint replacement op (hip) here. That was nearly a year ago and she is still virtually bedridden after SEVERAL corrective ops. I would not consider such an operation here.

I agree that such surgery is not advisable in the TRNC. A good friend of ours is a wealthy Turkish Cypriot and whenever he need any medical treatment, he always returns to the UK, even though he can well afford the best the TRNC has to offer. When it comes to medical equipment and facilities, and supply of such, unfortunately the TRNC does not have access nor the million pound budgets to afford the best as available in other countries. When it comes to your health, taking a punt is not worth it !

My wife has had two replacement knees fitted here by Doctor Ali at Girne Ozel Hastanesi. The doctor insists on fitting Swiss replacement joints which have an expected life span of 25 years. The attention and after care was excellent, far superior to the UK where my wife had a replacent knee at a private hospital. The cost per operation was approximately 12,000 - 13,000TL. Please feel free to phone my wife if you want further information - 0533 8464624.

I would really think twice about having major surgery in the Trnc. I had laser treatment to remove a kidney stone at the Girne private hospital and 8 weeks later went through a well mans clinic in Lefkosa. The well mans clinic established that the stone was still there but failed to pick up a malignant tumour on my kidney. In have since had the kidney removed in the Uk and hopefully the tumour has been eradicated. I will never again have major surgery in this country.

Dear Tony, I had a knee replacement 3 years ago in the TRNC. Excellent operation and excellent after care service. The Turkish Cypriot consultant has been performing knee and hip operations here, since 1991, so has considerable years of experience. He has a very good reputation as he also operates in Turkey. My scar is hardly visible and I can bend my knee back 135 degrees whereas many patients are pleased if they can get a 90 degree movement. The consultant also speaks very good English. His clinic is in Famgusta, not too far to go if you want a good job done on your knee. The consultant’s name is Dr Hakan Dincyurek and his mobile number is 0542 851 2928. You may wish to give him a call to discuss your situation. Should you do so, please say that I recommended him. Grahame

You could also try the Aretaeion Hospital in the South, which is near Orphaenedis. Someone I know had two hip replacements their at different times, and she was very pleased wth the results. I have had treatment for my back their, and have to say that they are excellent, and reasonably priced . Telephone number is 00357 22200426, but you won't be able to call them on your Cyprus mobile phone, have to use a landline or Englsh mobile. Stella
