Just heard that the BRS have negotiated a deal, that if you donate blood it counts towards your yearly residency, therefore taking away the hassle of getting a blood test done. Sounds good to me.

muadib I know that in the UK there is an age limit but here they seem to be more flexible, I know that a 70+ person donated blood last week and has done so on several occasions when called upon to do so. I guess when tests on the blood is done and something is lacking then they do not take it. Maybe someone in the know could let you know or just go along to the donation days and see.

Give blood which will have to be Grouped and tested,, or give a sample of blood for testing,, Surely the only difference is the quantity involved..

As far as I know at the state hospitals they are flexible with the upper age limit as long as you are fit and well e.g Good Haemoglobin level and Bloof Pressure okay. Also depends on medications. Near East University Hospital however have a very strict criteria and won't take anyone over the age of 60 years. Chris

Yes, but if you give Blood it still has to be tested for any invidious diseases..even if as Chris says your "Bloof Pressure" is OK......

I think you are all being a little premature looking for clarity at this stage "This is Cyprus" remember! I have been a blood donor for a number of years and have the BRS donor card to prove it. I need to renew "residency" in August, and would hope it will be sorted by then......Then again....I also believe in the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas.

Probably but I was only asking if someone knew? A negative answer is not what I was looking for but then that is part of the course with this board.

Brinsley, good point, well made. So you would refuse any blood you needed if the person who gave it did so in order not to have a blood test instead (never mind the possibility that they also may not have to pay the 135TL for the privalige of having a blood test), well done to you for standing on your principles and quietly fading away. Personaly I think that even if you can avoid the blood test that the fee to avoid it will remain the same but it is a damn good way to get more needed blood into the bank - that will help everyone. If I needed it, I would care less where it came from and how it got to me and having been in that situation as well I can speak from experiance. It is really wonderful how your morals change when faced with crisis!!!

I think this now raises more questions than it answers. If you give blood and it is tested for (my guess is more than than required for the residency blood test) are the relevant authorities notified? or are they only required to notify the authorities about failures against the standard residency requirements?

I do get out quite alot thanks Bob, hence I work. When information is put on here that would be of some benefit then of course you would like points clarified. No point saying congrats when it hasn't been put into play. I also agree that you shouldn't be giving blood to benefit from it but to get something back is better than nothing, especially when we hear reports of them messing up the results and costing more money in having them re-tested. Bob I wish you good luck for August.

MSG 2; Is there an age limit to be able to give blood? It's same here as in UK, there is no upper age limit apart from first time donors. This is 62. They were already to take mine until I told them I'd not given before. T ps and I didn't get a biscuit!!

Msg 22 You're interpretation of my post is off the wall. Patients receiving blood are invariably under anesthetic and wouldn't have a clue who the blood donor was nor under what circumstances it was donated. I wouldn't think the surgeons would know either. The point is that those that are able to donate blood but don't will now receive a finacial incentive (135TL) to do so. Those that can't (for a variety of reasons) will be penalised. Another ill conceived TRNC Government/BRS idea, if true! Richard

If you are giving blood regularly or on a "on call basis" the chances are you will not be able to donate a month before residency renewal. Plus presumably a TB test will still be required which I `m sure will still cost 135tl Good idea in theory, the practise maybe very different

I appreciate that there is some sort of warped logic in the assumption that because I am over 60, I am in no danger (incapable!) of contracting a STD - but..... can anyone explain how my age also magically protects me from TB?

Don't get your hopes too high. It was reported on this forum that someone trying to re-new a driving licence wasn't able to because they were over 60 so didn't need the anual visitors visa (for the time being), the person wouldn't issue licence as no visa, not understanding that they didn't need one. Next thing will be no issue of annual visitor visa because the visa department won't know that blood has been donated, or that the rules have changed, unless it's that persons turn to make up the rules for the day.

Answer to rrevet - it has been said many times on this forum already that you need a temp residency visa to get a driving licence, which is why the BRS has been saying, ok if you dont drive, you dont officially need one, but still advise people to get one anyway due to the changing circumstances one finds over here. Back to the blood test - blood can be given at an official BRS organised donor day, if it is within 30 days or you work it out and go to the Blood Bank in Girne or Nicosia and give it there within the 30 days. No one has to wait for a donor Day if they wish to donate blood at any time! Just remember you can only do it twice a year, I believe., so if you are a donor and under 60, =just work it out first! BUT the papers jumped the gun - not for the first time - and this has not been officially acknowledged or put in writing and agreed with all the Ministries. AND no one is asking you to give just to save money! Its your money and your blood!

contd This is being done in response to many questions and queries from blood donors. So, if you are a donor, thats fine - go ahead - you still need the tb test or Xray but it wont cost so much as both. In response to another query - the blood testing that is done for donation is more thorough than the one done for the residency, according to the BRS Welfare rep and all results are kept on the Blood Bank computer.

Well thats an improvement and the same happens in Lebanon. I am on the Blood Donor register here and have given regularly and hey presto I now have 3 years FREE Residency in Lebanon. However you can be called in middle of night to give blood so its a recognition of donating. However normal rules apply only once in a 6 month period, no alcohol etc. Yes when I lived in TRNC I gave blood everytime I was there but I never received any BRS Card for it? I guess this will only apply to people who donate blood at BRS Donor sessions as there is the way of accounting for it. Would be interested in further info for when I return to retire to TRNC>

The blood "given" can be given at either of the Blood Banks if you dont want to go to a state hospital, OR at a BRS Blood donor day. The results all go to the same computer, so you do not have to go to an official day, either BRS or state. The Bank in Lefkosa is in the State Hospital grounds, but a seperate entity. When you go for your tests, you tell them you are a blood donor and they look you up on the computer, as long as it is within the 30 days you are ok - and as long as its not just a day or two past, as the results may not be on the computer yet! Eventually they hope to give written forms out to you when the results are through, and then you would show them............
