Are the banks /shops closed New years day in TRNC ?

Yep, certainly banks and government departments will be closed but you may find most supermarkets open with smaller shops deciding to close for the day. You will find some if not all of the petrol stations will be open but it may be a bit hit and miss so make sure you have enough petrol in your car to do what you need to do on the day. Also all Pharmacist's will be closed apart from duty Pharmacist's and you can find out which ones are open from the local english language papers.
