HI

First i would like to wish all you expats a very happy new year.

We have just bought a propery at Salamis Bay in Famagusta & hope to move there later this year. We would like some advise on the nearest border crossing & directions on how to get there. Can you help.

Thanks

Maureen

From Salamis, go straight through Famagusta until you get to the traffic island with the monument on. Take the second exit and it will take you directly to the crossing. There is a shortcut, but stick to the above route for your first time.

The Famagusta crossing is the quickest one of all of them to use.

This is partly because on the Greek side it is located on British Soverign Base Area (SBA) land and manned by them on behalf of the Greek Cypriot authorities. Incidentally, SBA territory/land is NOT a part of the EU (even though the UK and the Rep of Cyprus both are), and UK traffic laws apply.

They are red-hot on catching speeders - beware!

Dear Little Mo, re msg 1

Welcome to the forum..

please don't refer to the UN cease fire line as a "border".. especially in the "south" as you may well get a lecture that the only borders in Cyprus are the Med..!

The SBA Police are GCs and TCs indirectly employed by the Ministry of Defence and uphold the "green line" regulations far more rigorously than the RoC police

What is the "Green line" and it's regulations? This Slovenian site might help..

http://www.eu2008.si/en/News_and_Documents/Press_Releases/June/0616SPBR_Cyprus.html

or this one..

http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/05/197&format=HTML&aged=1&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

NOTE .. no reference to "border"..

I love popping over the BORDER as I find the BORDER so easy to cross. Across the BORDER you can get lovely pork kebabs. There is a BORDER post that you need to stop at to get your passport stamped because you are going to a whole other country.

So remember, go over the BORDER for your pork kebab.

Dear Donty, re msg 12

Aren't you "glad" a TC Doctor bothered to take Turkey to the ECHR to get the right for you to cross over to get your Pork .. ?;)

He doesn't think there's a border, either.. and he MADE Turkey open the gates...

PS, Never had my passport stamped- don't show one.. and IF I ever did - we don't need our passports "stamped" to visit the lovely part of Cyprus you frequent...

re msg 11, Dee,

Never had the pleasure of meeting "Juliet" ... just wondered if you'd had time to admit you're wrong about the 101 Mosques that "don't exist" in the rump "RoC"... ;)

I know I owe you a response re the Paphos Mosque...

Re msg Dee 16

I'm very sorry I haven't had a reply from my TC contact. I had asked him again .. but may be he is away.

It is quite amusing that you can't simply say "I got it wrong - I apologise"...

Do you know what,I only ever post about Thalassa trying to drum support to go the owners website but you lot must be very bored.

Almost every thread from legitimate people asking for advice gets hijacked by people just taking spats at each other, constantly. Why don't you hardcore posters who have obviously lived in cyprus for a while just respect that the first person who posted was looking for some help regarding the crossing.

There was only one genuine reply, the rest of you just get into a tit for tat game with each other,I'm sure I wasn't the only one who kept scrolling down the replies looking for a proper answer.

If you keep doing it(and there are much worse offenders on other threads) ,then new people will simply stop posting,as its pointless.

Just my humble opinion of course.

Marky Mark - yet another of your obsessional ravings. Can you not realise that you bore us all to death? Do you really imagine that other board members will cease to use the word 'border' as a result of your inane posts?

As far as I am concerened it is a border, and I will continue to use the word as and when I like.

For goodness sake, consult a doctor about your obsessional problem!

re De msg 21

"When you have proven that you are right, I may consider an apology but please don't hold your breath waiting...then again... "

Dee, even your most ardent "fan" knows you blew it re your claim about mosques in the "rump" RoC..

Every time you post some "excuse" your cred slips that bit more.. do you need me to post your promise to apologise, if someone could show just one Mosque in the "rump" RoC - I found 101 for you - on this thread, too ?!

Dear Kaiserphil, re msg 20

You are free the call the "green line" what you want, of course, just as I am free to remind you how it is correctly referred to by the UN, EU, UK, ECHR.....

Dear Dee msg 21/ Clarets 22

I need you to be specific about any "problem" I might have..and it's relevance to calling the "green line" a "border"... ! ;)

Re msg 28, Dee the "trollop" is an accomplished musician and plays the Piano to public concert performance level.. she is articulate, intelligent, a good Mum and a Fantastic wife... How she looks to you, has bugger all to do with the thread / Cyprus.

FYI she knows more Turkish than most folk on this board and has been to TR independently of me.

Third parties / family members should be off limits..I think it is time for a VERY public apology ...

You are probably right that 'third parties' should be off limits, but don't mention them yourself. I don't go on about my harem of hot, willing babes do I!

Your homepage that you offer up to one and all is full of her as well!

She also takes up half your avatar so you are chucking her into the firing line, especially being such a total bore who bats for the other side (as it were!)

Dear Donty, re msg 35

"You are probably right that 'third parties' should be off limits"

no probably about it..

"but don't mention them yourself. I don't go on about my harem of hot, willing babes do I! "

and WHERE do I mention having any "harem"...? The web site link is to a family album of photos.. I'm not the only member that shows a "his and her" avator, either..

Yawn - another poster who thinks following a similar line to the EU/ UN / UK means I'm biased to the GC side... Do you actually pay attention to my "boring" posts? .. I'd hardly think supporting Annan was / is a GC perspective.... ;)

You'd also know we aren't "fans" of the RoC Interior Ministry or their subsidiary Immigration Section .. do keep up...

Stick to the Cyprus issues and NOT my wife..

Dear Clarets, re re 40 .. where does it say "border" when you cross from the SBA or RoC..?

These are the only recognised administrations on Cyprus.

If you doubt that, you can always refer to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth website, of the UN web site relating to Cyprus, or the EU web site relating to the "green line" regulations..

You'll see "green Line" or crossing points or cease fire line - but " NEVER the word "border"...

I show my passport if I fly from Bristol to Belfast ..does that mean I'm leaving the UK?
