It's a pity PP wasn't on here because he has done this trip a couple of times and would be the right person to help you. I'm sure though there are others. Good Luck to you.

We drove from the UK in October last year, the route we used was Calais - Ancona then Cesme -Tasucu total of 1707 miles ,took us 8 days the sat nav was a godsend but unless you update the maps no use in Turkey. The ferry from Italy takes 3 days, nice rest ,but do be aware that the cost of importing the car when you arrive are very high, for a year old Astra 1.6 it has just cost us approx £5000 in import taxes, road tax and to register the car onto local plates

If you took that route from Avonmouth to Limassol what would be the procedure for getting your car into the North.

We did this trip and turned it into a holiday. Glasgow to Dorchester then on to London then Dover. France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey then home. Keep out of Austria unless you stop at their border and pay their road tax. We did not and the Gestapo Austrian polis hovered 125 euro out of our wallet and gave us 2 days to leave the country. We were only in Austria for 20 minutes when this happened. Vince

Most interested in further info on the Limassol - Avonmouth ferry. Shipped out our old estate car to NC last year but the import duty the government now wants is frankly criminal, not to mention the way we have been mucked about when trying legitimately to sort it out. The customs/tax office seem to treat it like a 'oh how we gave them Brits the run around - snigger snigger' game. Would rather get the car out of the country & their clutches than give them the satisfaction of finding some way of seizing the car & having us over.

Msg 10 Grimaldi Lines (Naples based I think) Interestingly saw their ferry in Avonmouth 3 days ago Dont think the border guards will care, on Greek side as they will consider you a legitimate entry, not sure about TRNC though

Hi Vince Interesting post on travel from UK. Any more detail regarding main stop off points on way would be great. How would you go avoiding Austria? How much is the road tax if you pay at the border? Regards Lyn
