Nick, if you had your way you would close down every thread ?

Why not post one of your own interesting threads so we can debate with you on subjects that you hold dear ?

This is a good thread and certainly better than the Villa to rent or villa for sale rubbish we get all too often.

there seems to be a lot of trnc locals who think it will not be good to unite the island and wish it to remain independent ! they think it will spoil the individuality and economy further to become part of the EU ! being a newish person to this situation could somebody politely explain to me why a unite is so important to ex pats etc ! there must be a lot of "spin offs" in all directions from property prices to availability of goods to direct flights etc but surely it does feel a little special not being part of the masses !!

apologies if i sound bit daft you have to be so careful what you say on this forum or get bundles critisism ! i,m not convinced that the greeks or turks hate people although anyone who has been to war would find forgiveness almost impossible ! for instance us english and the good old germans ! perhaps its best that there is a divide between the turks and greeks for a little longer as time is surely the best healer

Snakes re msg 7

As a newbie, may be you forget that Cyprus IS in the EU, already.. that locals.. the REAL Cypriots - irrespective of ethnicity can have EU passports.. travel freely all over the island and Europe, etc.

When ex-pats living in the north cannot buy goods where they want and have to pay duties, don't have UK health rights, need to get "work permits", "permission to purchase" and realise that there are many other issues with property re Cyprus ( all of it).. they want some "security" .

As recently as 2004 - TCs wanted to give up "TRNC" and be re-united, too..

Sadly, the GCs said no as they didn't have a leader who would compromise the right of a GC to take possession of their homes and lands, and the right to live and work like any other EU citizen.

The Irish and the Brits, Brits and French,.. we all manage under the EU.. just !

The EU - for all it's MANY faults sems to have been responsible for ensuring no European wars for the longest time in history (me

snakes:

But I reckon even more TCs want to improve their lives and reclaim their share in Cyprus. They're not independent, BTW. They are controlled by Turkey, which many TCs resent strongly.

Lol, fear not, I'm one of the gentle ones who just speaks out in the name of justice and morality sometimes. The point I'd make here is that 35 years is time enough to let things heal, don't you think? Unfortunately it has been too ,ong for many who now feel estranged from their fellow Cypriots.

thanks to you both for pointing out some good facts re reconsilliation ! message 8 mmmmmmm !!! you speak of ex pats needing security re property etc but surely they knew the "score" when they 1st bought property there and moved there ! personally i feel as we have done ! we have bought property and accept the place in which we chose and if it doesnt change then so be it ! although we may change our attitude when finally out there to live as it seems most have then i will probably understand more about how you feel !

thetruth,

The permits are needed because the high level of military control over the governing of north Cyprus. The generals get away with more in Cyprus than they would in Turkey, IMO. These guys are deeply conservative and suspicious of anything out of their own sphere of influence. They are un-European in outlook and, some would argue, not being truly Kemalist. (Strokes non-existent beard thoughfully).

Downer seems to be a guy with a sense of humour. Maybe he'd enjoy this FZ classic:
