I'll second that susief although recently I have been having a mixed doner which is lush. I also like the kiremit (tile) kebabs from Sevener and Bizim Han and tandoori chicken from Cano's in Karsiyaka.

Unlike our culinary points of reference above, I am quite partial to:

St Agur Blue Cheese-Blessed Cauliflower Soup

Pāté de Lapin

Seafood Gallentine

Mousse de Saumon et Cāpres

Filet mignon aux Oignons - Gratin dauphinois

All without chilli sauce!

And washed down with a bottle of 'Domaine de la Romanée Conti "La Tāche" Grand Cru' or Trimbach Clos Sainte Hune Riesling.

Or, if the missus has the night off, a donner and a can of Fanta.

My husband likes the boreks from Dano Bakery. Best boreks I had were from the little cafe next to the kids playground in Karsiyaka, yummy!

AJ and Lulubell if you like Kleftico then you should try the lamb in the well at the Deniz Kizi hotel on Sundays. Whole legs and shoulders of lamb that are hung in a well dripping all their lovely juices over potatoes and onions. It's scrumptious. Served with rice, salad, yoghurt, etc followed by fresh fruit. I think it was 26ytl last year and well worth the money. They serve at 2pm.

I always think that kleftico is a greek dish. There is a Turkish variation begins with I (inic or something like that). Padisah, located in the road opp the Colony, do a good one.

Denizkisi do you cook kolokas yourself and if so can you tell me what you do with them please.

I also love bulgar kofte and basically all the food cooked by my Cypriot friends. Molohiye is ok but I find it a bit sour.

For good Cypriot home cooking try London Turan in Alsancak.

I have I am afraid no favourite local food.

It is all so greasy. Tried it again yesterday at a local restaurant in town. Who shall be nameless.

The turkish pizzas with meat on. Do not know what they are called, oozed grease when you folded them.

I find all the kebabs smelly and have tried all the well known and recommended places.

I love mezze. Have been to the Lebonan where the Mezzes were delicious. Also many other countries.

Here you seem to get jarred beetroot. Tinned Homous and Tahini. Cabbage soaked in vinegar. Cheap and cheerful fare when if more pride was involved. Edible food could be achieved.

Not impressed at all with the local food. Now given up on it.

To message 33 Joandjelly: Yes I cook it myself. After peeling you break it into chunks, don't cut it! (it is usually stewed with chicken, onions and tomatoes). You also have to cook it well as it can irritate your mouth and throat if not cooked properly - never eat it raw. With baby kolokas, you can cook them in oil and they are delicious!!

Thanks denizkisi I had heard that you shouldn't wash them and that it is good roasted. I'm a bit wary now that you've mentioned throat irritation. How well is well cooked or perhaps I should say how long should I cook it for?
