Have just been told by several banks that due to some kind of rule by the central bank here that they cannot accept Scottish Pounds! I brought some cash over from UK in Scottish Pounds, but no-one wants to accept it. Although they accept it is legal tender and is no different to English Pounds, they say they can't accept it so be warned - only English Pounds are accepted!

This is a real pain to anyone in our position. Although Scots money is NOT legal tender in the rest of the UK, has become universally accepted by custom and practice. Once you go abroad though, shops and banks get nervous because they get charged extra when exchanging, hence our bawbees are often not accepted. Nothing for it but to grit the teeth and ask your bank for English notes before you jet off. I still enjoy flaunting Scottish pound notes, as they don't wear a hole in your pocket like the blasted coins do.

FredWest I beg to differ, although shops will decline Scottish pounds in the UK you could always walk into a bank and exchange them for real money. AJ

Yes that is correct. When the term "legal tender" was refered to it was meant accepted tender to shops and business, which it isnt.

Scottish currency is legally accepted in England etc but you do not have to accept it if offered as change as it is NOT legal tender . There used to big notices in travel brouchures that Scottish notes would not be accepted in countries like Turkey plus notices in foreign airports on arrival. Despite this saw someone stand in enormous queue at Dalaman for visa, get to the front and were annoyed the notes were refused and had to return to back of queue trying to find someone to change the notes. Nobody would of course, probably had to sell the children!!!

CIH is correct. If you own a business in the UL you can refuse to take a Scottish note. Banks will exchange them though.

ERMMM If you take the "knowledge of Britain" test - required to get UK citizenship - which most of us would FAIL ! .. the correct answer is apparently SCOTTISH currency IS legal tender Any way do some of the tests http://www.hiren.info/life-in-the-uk-test/ just add a 1,2, etc on the end for new one,s and see if you can be "British"... Imagine having to do a knowledge of Cyprus test to be able to be a resident in Cyprus in Turkish ( or Greek!).... The next time someone says getting to be a Brit citizen is easy....

then you read this from the "Bank of England Website".. "Are Scottish & Northern Irish notes legal tender? In short ‘No’ these notes are not legal tender; only Bank of England notes are legal tender but only in England and Wales. The term legal tender does not in itself govern the acceptability of banknotes in transactions. Whether or not notes have legal tender status, their acceptability as a means of payment is essentially a matter for agreement between the parties involved. Legal tender has a very narrow technical meaning in relation to the settlement of debt. If a debtor pays in legal tender the exact amount he owes under the terms of a contract, he has good defence in law if he is subsequently sued for non-payment of the debt. In ordinary everyday transactions, the term ‘legal tender’ has very little practical application." AHA, even blooming UK Govt appointed institutions can't agree

I had trouble with my Scottish pound notes in Istanbul as I forgot to change them (and I knew the difficulty) On arriving once in Istanbul I was told that "Must have Madams head on it...." and I can see their point. I have had them accepted in Turkey though. Thing is, there is more than one type, as B.O.S. R.B.O.S. & Clydesdale all have different notes & there used to be more! I don't know if they are legal tender in England, but have never had trouble in recent years using them in London, even on buses, which I didn't expect. It may interest you to know that during W.W.1 when my late father was about to embark to France on active service they nearly mutinied because the shopkeepers wouldn't accept the Scots soldiers money. The mayor of the town apologized and told them to accept their money "As they were fighting for the same cause" My dad was very impressed with this.

Get over it! Scottish notes aren't even technically Legal currency in Scotland! They're just some Touristy thing, the same as Tartan, Bagpipes, Haggis, and all the other Victorian claptrap the Scots come up with. None of it is genuine! I wonder what 'Scottish' Currency would be worth if they had ever been silly enough to pretend to be able to survive as a Country on their own. Anything 'Scottish' is as genuine as a tin of 'Shortbread'!
