Hi all,

I have seen people fishing off the little harbour at Esentepe and I know someone down there hires his boat for the day for fishing trips.

stingray I go fishing most days over here there are some good spots up and down the coast line. one of them at turtle bay village from the man made Jetty.

I will be fishing from there on tuesday(weather permitting) you can catch different species from this jetty . I have seen Squid caught from there . bucket loads caught using a special lure . I think this was in march they only came in though for two to three days. Eels are also caught in the rocks using dead bait. these eels are about two to three feet in length are brown in colour with dark

spots. I also caught a stone fish wihch weighed about four pounds. You can also catch what i call Garr fish . If you just want some sport ! there are lots of marks up and down .Just follow the locals

What baits are you useing. I tried some of those frozen white bait out of the freezer at Lemar but it kept breaking up all the time. Also tried bread, luncheon meat, sweetcorn but not had much success.

If all else fails try lure fishing for Yellowmouth Barracuda. Use light tackle (3lb to 10lb test max) to make it fun as they are'nt the biggest things in the sea.

Stingray for small fish with the pole I use fresh prawns (not cooked ones) For eels use dead bait for the bigger fish use a white bung as a casting weight with eihter a lure or a dead bait. For carp we use sweet corn and fish meal pellets or bread Regards Ronaldo

I dont really fish from shore but I caught the Barracudas in Girne old harbour.

The one in the pictures is about the biggest i have had out.

http://s497.photobucket.com/albums/rr332/1Monkey1234/?action=view¤t=barracuda3-crop.jpg

I dont remember which lure I used but it would have been a small rapala or a metal bodied lure.

I was fishing in the summer, too cold for me to go out now

Let us know how you get on.

There is good tuna fishing from May through October although they can still be caught outside this period. Main variety is bluefin which run to about 100kg here although 15-25kg is a more normal size. There are rumours of 500kg fish having been seen and occasionally caught commercially. The main technique is trolling although they can be caught with livebait. Trolling will also catch other species such as dolphin (the fish not the mammal), dorado, barracuda etc.

There is a boat in the old harbour owned and operated by Barbaros - I am afraid I don't have a phone number. If you walk round the harbour it is an English built Princess with lots of fishing rods arranged about the stern. He is a nice guy and knows what he is doing, and he's a good cook aswell.

If you can find a few others interested in joining you it will cost about £50 each, although I don't know current prices exactly. Occasionally Barbaros makes up parties of individuals. Talk to him.

Sorry Alan. I missed your post. Jovial John has given a good insight into tuna fishing.

I have mainly caught Albacore tuna when I've gone out.

The Karabetca boat in in the old harbour does fishing trips Tel: 0090 542 853 0894

Just to expand a little further.

Firstly - yes, many of the 'day trip' boats will take you fishing but Barbaros does fishing exclusively.

Other species you can catch here are Albacore (as Donty says), Bass, Blue Runner, Bream, Eel, Conger Eel, Sting Ray, Eagle Ray, Flounder, Thornback Ray, Gar, Greater Amberjack (locally called Mineri), Grouper, Mackerel, Swordfish, Wahoo.

There are also several shark species (Black Tip, Blue, Great White, Sand Tiger,Thresher) but I don't know anybody who fishes for them, only that the longliners occasionally hook them (i.e. the 800kg Great White caught off Lapta last summer)

For a complete list of Cyprus marine species go to http://www.fishbase.org/ , scroll down to "Information by Country / Island", select 'Cyprus' and click 'marine' or 'game'.

Hope this helps.

Karabetca and Barbaros are the same thing. The boat is named Karabetca and the owners name is Barbaros Karabetca!

Only went out once with him and caught a Dorado. His number is (or was back then) 0090 542 853 0894

Personally have better results going with my buddy but unfortunately it's a small boat only big enough for 2.

Some good course fishing in the south side just past Nicosia on the Larnaca Road, went last year before the drought hit us. There is a lot of web sites giving locations and the type of fish in that particular lake.

Not many good fishing lakes this side. Best to keep it too yourself if you find a descent site, as the locals catch the carp and take them home for supper.

hi plumber, i fished at arapkoy three times before i caught a carp . the last time was october when i fished on the far side , i catapulted ten large balls of ground bait towards the dead trees in the water to my left. using a method feeder i waited three hours before i go any indications then the rod was nearly dragged in ! when i landed it , it was a ten pound scale perfect wild common carp that put up an amazing fight. i hooked another shortly after but this snagged me up. the hook bait was 8mm maple syrup boilie with a few grains of corn in the feeder. steve west a mate caught a couple of small ones in the summer fishing a straight lead with hair rigged corn close inn, but that was summer i would advise feeder fished in the deeper water at this time of the year. im back over boxing day for a week so i will be having another bash .

Hi Steve

I have fished Arapkoy last year and every week since April this year, until the heavy rain started a couple of weeks ago. Since the water has coloured up and risen at least two metres the fish have been very shy, I have only managed to catch a few on worm, as sweetcorn or bread have recently failed to produced any bites. The one good thing about the fish going off the feed is that you will not be plagued by tiddlers stealing your bait. I used to regularly catch upward of twenty fish in a few hours, but mostly small stuff. There are some nice double figure carp in there, even though the locals take almost every fish they catch. I have caught common, mirror and crucian carp in Arapkoy. Don't give up.

plumber re mess 47 the cormorants , i have never seen any at arapkoy or any other inland water in north cyprus, if these savage birds are indeed moving to freshwater to feed it wont be long before they eat everything a pound or under. last night i had a phone call from rick tyrer a angler based in germany who fishes compertions in holland ( match fishing is banned in germany) he told me the dutch government has just removed these birds from the official protected list , they have all but wiped out all small to average size silver fish in holland. they are evaluating how to kill half a million of these savage birds, they have the biggest population in western europe. here in the uk they were removed from protection some eight years ago and many have been shot by both commercial carp fisheries and trout and salmon associations, no figures are available of how many still live in inland UK but i and many other anglers see far less than we used to thank god. . . . andy

Yes, I have seen two cormorants at Aropkoy recently, also great white egret, little egret, grey heron, night heron and kingfisher. All of these birds feed on fish, I know that the cormorants can be a pest, but lets hope they are not going to be resident. The local fishermen probably take more fish than these birds, you don't see too many heron or cormorants flying off with double figure carp!

mike i dont think your grasping the problem thats happening in the likes of holland, these birds will wipe out the younger fish leaving only old and larger ones that they cant eat and you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work out what happens next , they eventually die of old age and the end result another lake with no fish in it !

ive seen loads of cormorants around the coast of northern cyprus and once they suss out its easier to eat carp inland just like their brothers and sisters have in central and northern europe it will be the begining of the end of coarse fishing in cyprus . .

anyone got a M16 they can loan me!

Hi Andy, yes I am well aware of the damage these cormorants cause to fisheries, I have seen them trying to take trout out of holding pens on Chew Valley lake in Somerset when I used to fly fish there, but as I said in my last post 'lets hope they are not going to become resident'.

i must say i was not aware of cormorants on the inland freshwaters of northern cyprus until i read posts on here but after visiting gectickale res and the lake at gonendere last week i must say im concerned. at gectickale there was twelve birds and at gonendere two. these birds must be shot, please hunters ( and there are lots of you) go and blast these vermin.

cormorants are sea birds that eat sea fish but have moved inland due to diminishing fish stocks at sea ( info for those that dont understand)

I think the fish and frogs were stocked to eat the fly larvae , especially the mozzies . It would be a shame to loose whats there just coz of a few birds .... steve

Have just returned from a days fishing at Arapkoy, no sign of the cormorants, or herons or kingfishers. Lets hope the cormorants have now moved on. The level has risen another couple of feet since mid December, unfortunately so has the level of litter ie discarded cans, bottles and unwanted fishing line. Someone had recently had a picnic and left all unwanted trash including disposable nappies!!!!!

The discarded litter and rubbish makes me annoyed every time I visit Arapkoy or any other reservoir in TRNC. You ask why these people do this? I see the same thing in the UK when sea fishing on the coast of the Bristol channel, so it is not just here. Have you ever noticed the pavements outside of news agents in the UK, they are covered in chewing gum. Same mind set, finished with it, chuck it!
