Redtom

22lb common is that a typo me and my mate Ronaldo regularly fish the lake and have yet to catch anything above a pound in weight but we catch a lot of them and Ronaldo is a complete novice when it comes to angling.

Hopefully we will be fishing there again in a few weeks time I know that Ronaldo's been watching a few videos on carp fishing hes hoping to improve

so whats this fishing thing then do you sit there all day eating sandwiches with the added flavour of squirming maggots and what do you do when you catch a fish, can you eat it? if not surely its better to go fishing take no bait and just a bottle of wine to have some peace away from the other half?

RE msg 7, rocky : (...) so whats this fishing thing then (...)

===> I happen to like sports fishing and appreciate a serious thread about my favourite passtime. That's why I thank you (not) for your worthless contribution, spoiling another thread.

RE msg 1, alano : (...) License (...)

===> Yes, you need one, I was told by the Police in Girne (obtainable in Lefkoşa, but they didn't know exactly where...). The Police in Lapta didn't know at all. Locals told me not to worry about it - they fished in Geçitköy reservoir without a permit. I wouldn't worry too much, alano...

Would anyone be interested to found a fishing club (like we have them in Holland and undoubtedly also in the UK) to make a competition, exchange knowledge, prepare maps with good spots etc?

BTW: I have made a map already with all the reservoirs in the North, including the kind of fish you can catch there, parking places and footpaths to the water etc.

I am told it is illegal to fish in the reservoirs as the fish have been introduced to reduce the mosquito larvae. Does anyone know if it is illegal?

I was also told the locals take no notice of the ban and to go ahead and fish without worry.

re message 8 I think Dutch Crusader has ruined a few threads himself and I wont name them so dont get your clogs in a twist. There was a serious question in my posting which he may not have been able to read and that was what do you do with the fish and can you eat carp? I dont know which fish are edible of the freshwater varieties although I suspect if you are hungry you would be grateful to eat any.

Erolz , Yes you can eat carp . Infact you can eat any type of freshwater fish. Carp were introduced into tarns and reservoirs centurys ago as a source of food for travelling Monks in the uk and europe.

So I note you can eat carp but do you ? Or do you guys purely fish for fun and competition?. If you eat a carp what is it like I must confess I have never tried freshwater fish.

hi rocky, here in the UK its all but unheard of to eat freshwater fish. the UK as a massive angling population of which there are many diverse models to it lilke specimen carp fishing( the biggest growth area in the sport world wide) match fishing, pike fishing salmon and trout or just plain pleasure fishing. untill the eastern europeans came all course species like carp, bream, pike, roach, perch and others were returned to fight another day. we get a buzz from catching a fish but love to see it returned from where it came. its become a major problem over here that course fish a being taken to the table. yes i think it would be great to start a north cyprus fishing club IM WELL UP FOR IT.

Sunday evening, 7.30 pm. Two (2...) emails received about starting a TRNC fishing club. So, not a very popular idea, I think... Tight lines, all of you fishermen! As far as I'm concerned: end of thread "Carp fishing".

Hey I think a fishing club is an excellent idea, at least it will give people a chance to meet other like minded people with a good impass of information as to where to fish what species, bait and tactics involved.

Looking forward to meeting some of you anglers.

I think a coarse fishing club would be great.... I have struggled to catch much from the sea.

I would like to give the lake just past Acupluco a try at Easter...

Anybody got any advice on Bait and tackle to bring ?????

Should i bring full carp gear or just a pole and a tin of sweetcorn...

Hi Andy, where are you staying when you come or have you got property here?

Would love to join you. I understand the bottom is very deep and covered in boulders is this true. I have one of the castable fish finders which could help. Have you fished here before? The locals fish it from the dam wall if thats what you can call it, but have seen anglers fishing the far bank and from a distance they seem to know what they were about (Not Novices) Will you bring baits from the UK or use local stuff ie bread s/corn and chicken and such like.

Dear Brits, what a sad bunch (most of) you are. When - on this board, this thread - I offered to coordinate a meeting for potential members of a fishing club --- I had two replies. And now I read : "I'd like to etc". Saddening.

Dutch

I'm sure some people will appreciate joining a club but we dont all want to be organised into groups. Some of just want to find a kindred spirit to hang out with whilst enjoying a sport. I go sea fishing with just one friend and its cool like that as we think alike.

Thanks for the offer though!

Carbotec I suspect most of the fish in the lakke are virgin As the locals eat them. although the ones Kenny and i caught were put back. Lets have a guess your weight on the picture of the fish which gooligans brother in law caught . I reckon it was 2lb 8 ozs

Ron I think you have the weight wrong, the fish looks like a wildie and I would say 2.2lbs certainly no heavier, its got no belly.

Alan have a look at this site. From what I can see its still jeff sailisbury from exeter angling, who infact was the designer of the rod, and is still selling them.

(We) have fished the two resevoirs near the Valley View resturaunt and have had mixed bags of Common Carp and Crucian Carp, some up to a few pounds, although we have seen them into double figures. We fished Gonyelli a couple of times catching about forty fish each, but mostly small stuff, but, there are some good sized fish in there, have seen them being caught and slung into a bucket!! The late afternoon seems most productive, other than an all night session, but have not found the urge to try that yet!! The water levels are getting very low now, so more weedbeds are being exposed making fishing difficult at times in certain areas, however there is less water to cover resulting in plentifull bites and more fish. Bread seems to work well and produce better fish, but there are so many fry that continual checks on the bait are required. Sweet corn is the favourite bait judging by the amount of discarded tins at the waters edge and Efes the most popular drink!!!

To find Gonyelli resevoir take the lefkosia road out of Girne, when you have reached the top of the mountain and passed the turning for St Hilarion and start to descend you will approach a speed camera and a petrol station on the right, turn off to the right at this junction and follow the sign to Gonyelli. After travelling approx three miles you will come to a slight incline with a speed camera, shortly after this there is a turning on the left signposted to the sports ground, but the sign is on the left of the road you turn into so it is easy to miss. This road takes a sharp left after approx 1/2 mile and you will pass a row of houses, carry straight on once you have passed these houses and the small road will take you back out into open country, after approx 3/4 mile you will approach the sports ground. Take the dirt track to the right of the sports ground entrance and this will lead you to the resevoir. If you have Google Earth the route is easy to pick out.

There are two other venues that we have fished, both at Arapkoy. Drive past Acapulco Beach Hotel/Casino and turn off to the right just opposite the Valley view resturant, do not take the tarmac road but follow the dirt track down and past a 'farm house' the road bends to the right and it is approx 300yds to the resevoir. If you are in a car you will need to park at the bottom of the dam as the track up to the top is very rough and only suitable for a 4x4.

The other res is just along the main road, as you go up a hill past another hotel on the left (forget the name) turn off to the right next to a new housing developement and opposite a sign for Lara beach. Take the dirt track up towards a farm and some cow sheds, just as you get to some calf sheds on the left turn right and this will take you down to the dam. Both of these resevoirs are getting low now so there is a lot of exposed weed, but some good fish are in both.

top ten its the best kept secret in cyprus , the lake at arapkoy mike was giving directions for is spring fed and always full (or nearly)

the world record match fishing catch ( 600 pounds ) was broke in cyprus some dam in the south , not all these reservoirs are for drinking water thank god or all us coarse anglers would be sea fishing

Andy,

Never had a chance to put a bait out in TRNC yet. Looking forward to doing do in October. I think I might about be mad enough to try for the carp on a fly rod.

Alan,

Judging by all the interest in a club, it should be possible to keep it going. My wife will kill me for suggesting it, but I’ve done over 20 years on fishing club committees. I found regular meetings in a venue with cheap beer (darts and pool) keeps people coming back. Organising outings and working parties a complete waste of time, all the people who promised to turn up 4 pints ago, suddenly have previous engagements. Anyway I’m in the process of moving out permanently and I’m willing to play my part in a club.

im over again end of october, i think this will be a good time to fish these lakes with the temperature down at this time of year. im going to have a go at the reservoir i found ( thro google earth) above geticale over the new mountain road from tatlisu , i went for a reccy with steve west (blackpoolfan on here) and we saw small fry and there was empty efes and sweetcorn tins so it must hold carp. the lake at arapkoy holds the largest head of fish as far as im concerned . when me and steve fished it the margins where alive with tiny commons and mirrors and im talking thousands , we scooped the landing net and caught about a hundred all this years hatch so that tells you how many adult fish must be in there.

Hi,

husband fishes the Geticale reservoir regularly and has caught plenty of carp ranging from 4lbs to 6lbs.

In an average 4 hour session he catches between 40 to 80 small fish all on sweetcorn.

Thanks for that gooligan, The res looks very deep so hopefully still has some good depth of water since the photos were taken and holds a good head of fish? Must give it a try soon.

Hi,

sorry didn't reply earlier not been on line.

Husband said water level is down, but fished on Monday evening and still caught plenty of fish.

Still prefers fishing early morning and not early evening, said no difference in what you catch.

My lad is a hooligan for the fishing, carp and bream etc.

But he '14' year old enjoyed catching his first sea fish, cooking on coals and eating, with an Efes on the beach.

With Dad at 06:20 in the morning.

Fresh bread, butter and just the best breakfast ever.

Thankyou Cyprus.

Fishing in the North Cyprus reservoirs is permitted only with a special licence. Licences are issued by the Head Office of the Fisheries Department and Marine Research in Lefkosia (North Nicosia), or from District Offices of the Fisheries Department.
