I have been lurking on this forum for a while, but have now summoned up the courage to pop my cherry (posting wise) after having noticed the earlier "Trainspotting" thread! I will be dragging my wife on holiday to Girne in June (I do not let her read this site in case it puts her off!) as we sort of enjoyed a holiday to Paphos a couple of years ago but found the South a tad over-developed. We decided to forego the Eurozone and try to find somewhere relatively less developed for our holiday this year. I remember a family holiday as a boy in Kyrenia in 1973 and Famagusta the year before that and will be attempting to seek out places visited then to see how they have changed. We stayed in a caravan on a beach just outside Kyrenia - one of two or three caravans there. I remember there was a hotel overlooking the beach as we had to go up there to collect water. A photo of said beach (taken by my Mother) can be found here.... [IMG] http://i399.photobucket.com/albums/pp75/jetnoise_2008/Cypr

Looks like the posting length limit truncated my post! The URL for the pic is.... I can not tell you which side of Kyrenia it was, but it may have been known as Five Mile Beach. Is anybody able to identify it? Long shot I know! The Famagusta holiday was spent in the Regina Beach Hotel, pictured here... I have Googled it to no avail - anybody know what came of it - it may be stuck inside the no-go area? Finally, and explaining the title of this post, is anybody aware of any old/preserved/wrecked/dumped/displayed aircraft/helicopters etc lying around in the North of Cyprus? I am aware of the airliners at Nicosia's old airport, but is there anything else? Thanks for reading this and for any info forthcoming! Cheers, Ralph

AJ, Only this one at the moment, taken at Salamis I believe. I am the one on top of the stone. My Father is accompanied by my youngest Brother - now one of the Metroploitan Police's finest and the other Brother plays Baritone Sax in Jools Holland's R&B Orchestra! http://i399.photobucket.com/albums/pp75/jetnoise_2008/Cyprus/Vounis.jpg

jetnoise, To answer your questions:- 1. Five Mile Beach (previously known as Pentemilli) is on the northern coastline, approximately 8km west of the main harbour town of Kyrenia. It is now known as Escape Beach and looks nothin like it used to in your photo. 2. Regina Beach Hotel, I cannot find any information regarding this, so I guess it is in the no go area, however, I could be wrong.

"It is now known as Escape Beach and looks nothin like it used to in your photo." Nope, although I expect the caravan now has a mortgage on it....

jetnoise, The only ones that I know of are down the road to the old Mare Monte 'Government' hotel (now disused). It's a few kilometers further out than 5 mile beach, on the same side. Here's a link to a Google Earth screenshot showing the hotel, and 2 helicopters in a field nearby: - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3352/3209212648_7c3ac22532_o.jpg I've heard them referred to as 'the old Russian helicopters' - but for the life of me, I can't remember by whom, or where! I've emailed you the Google Earth 'KMZ' (placeholder) file, 'cos I couldn't work out how to post it here! Keith.

Hi Jetnoise Just to let you know that the picture of you with your head above the stone is taken at Vouni Palace which is in the North West of the island near Lefke. Jo

Re 1 Welcome to the board You might like to try here: http://varosha.multiply.com/ for a def answer re the Regina Hotel.. re 12 - as far as most Cypriots are concerned it's still known as Pentemilli (!) and it's a good beach for kids - if you can afford the fees.. GREAT Photos

All, Thank you all for the welcome and the info re. the caravan location. I am scouring Google Earth to try and folow the leads offered. I am not convinced that it is escape beach as that seems too large and the rocky outcrop is very different. I am looking at the area suggested by Bob and will let you know. As for the helicopters, thanks for the info Keith. I had already spotted them on GEarth when doing earlier research before booking the holiday but had assumed that they were active rather than derelict. If anyone finds out where they went then I woulod be interested to know. They look like Russian built Mi-8 or Mi-17 from GEarth. We are staying at the TopSet Hotel for our holiday as we wanted something on the sea and relatively small. I have only found one bad review for the place, but many good ones! As threatened, nearer the time I will be seeking restaurant recommendations etc, but for now can anyone recommend a detailed road map of N Cyprus? Cheers, Ralph

Hi jetnoise, Have a look at this link... http://www.cyprus44.com/map/north-cyprus-road-map.jpg That will keep you busy, until you get a proper paper map. As for restaurant recommendations, there are enough here to keep you fed up, well, for a long time watch this space! Navek

jetnoise The helicopters were moved between July and September 2008 and yes they were Russian. If you don't think the beach in your photo is the Escape Beach it may be the beach at the Deniz Kizi Hotel. Once again it is now very different If it isn't I haven't a clue where it is.

Jetnoise, the chap you owns the rooftop cafe in the south of the island overlooking no mans land may be able to advise you of the whereabouts of the hotel. Must admit,I dont come onto the site every day,and must have missed the posting maybe because of the title;but well worth reviving - may bring other menbers photos.Good stuff, kind regards,Steve |

Hi Steve re msg 28 I know David, the man who runs the site.. I was a member of several MSN Cyprus related sites and he joined one where I was one of two board admins.. one a "northie" and me a "southie"... You should join his site ... even if one doesn't hold all his views, he is a wealth of knowledge on this area and has managed to see more of decaying Varosha/ Marash than most ..

Hi Mark, you just log onto this site ti join I take it? I remember my auntie telling me that Farmagusta was the place to be in the late 60's - maybe thats why i have a greater interest because she showed me some snaps of the beaches similar to the ones shown. Couldn't afford Cyprus in the early 70's,and to be honest,it probably wasn't marketed because of the Eoka troubles - it really is a damn shame was has happened . The world seems to have forgotten about the partition, and all authorities seem to be just scratching the surface - the footage on the site should be shown more fully in schools,to foreign ministers and in time maybe invite tourists from both sides to visit the place,to see if the deadlock can be broken, kind regards,Steve
