Neil- We have used Economy Car Rental to come from the south to the north, they do not have a problem with their cars going north. Just google them. P

A friend of mine used Avis (avis.com ) and did take the car across the border. He booked the car on-line from the UK, collected the car from Larnaca, stayed in Kyrenia for 1 week then drove himself back to Larnaca. He did get a lot (putting it mildly) of hassle when it came to buying the insurance but nonetheless he stuck to his guns and took the car to the North. This was last summer.

Neil it was 2007 & their website used to have a note that it was okay to go north but did make the point about insurance. I'll see if I can get more information when I get home from work. P

Neil- You can take a car north with economy car rentals but they state you are a hundred percent responsible for getting the car back to the ROC & the insurance will only be the third party that you take out at the border. Hope this helps. Paul

Hi Have this morning booked a car from yourway.com for beginning of march and told them I would be taking it to Northern Cyprus. They not only said that would be ok but they have also sorted the insurance out as well! Bren

Brend - when you say they have sorted out your insurance, what exactly did they mean? Third party insurance must be bought at the border crossing on the North side, as far as I am aware. We have taken hire cars from South to North many times and this has always been the case. It's possible they have arranged insurance for the South but this does not apply in the North. I am sure if I am wrong, someone will correct me on this. Regards

Hi Fontana have always been very good when I've used them, and they are easy to contact out of hours. They have no problem with their cars going North. Very friendly service, prices reasonable and I've always had good cars. Happy to recommend them. Jo Valentine

Yes everyone - we have never had problems with hire cars South-North, but Brends post worries me slightly in terms of "insurance". Anyone?

I have also contacted yourway-carhire.com and received this reply. Thank you for your e-mail of 21/01/2009. If you hire a car from our company you can take it over the check point to the Occupied Area. We will arrange extra insurance (with Mr a Ferahzat by ISLEK ISGORTA- insurance company) with fully comprehensive with EURO 300.00 excess. Please advise category of car a duration to enable us to quote. Regards Katia Would be interested to hear from anyone who has hired a car from this company and the service that they received.

Hi all I actually sent an enquiry and asked about taking it to the North.I got the reply back that it was no problem and that it would be EURO 35.00 to insure it for the "occupied area". I have now booked it. Stingray Hiring in the South saves us taxi fares of £70 and flying to the south has saved me £276 (usually fly to north but can't pass on £276.) Brenda

The only thing I would say is you need to make sure who is responsible for getting the car back to the South in the event of a breakdown or accident. AJ

if a car company is in the north side of nicosia and you rent from them presumably you have the same insurance (fully comprehensive) as you would if picking up in kyrenia - is this correct because i am thinking of picking up a car from sun rent a car who have offices in nicosia (i'm assuming the north side?)

Hello Daily (msg 25) 'Sun' is a North Cyprus company and so will have the same insurance as other Car rental firms in the North. They have been established for ever - I remember them from about 25 years ago. Jo Valentine

Dont be fooled. and don't let anyone tell you any different they are trying to flog you something useless. No cars are fully insured from North to South and vice versa. Its down to the political situation and neither trusting the other. One thing you dont need from a holiday is a big bill for car repairs, or injured pedestrians/other road users, so be warned. Keep your wits about you.
