C4C welcome the re-opening today of Ledra Street

The pro-solution network of UK Cypriots, Cypriots for Cyprus (C4C) welcomed the long awaited re-opening of Ledra Street today in the divided Cypriot capital of Nicosia. The Cypriot leaders Mehmet Ali Talat and Demetris Christofias agreed to demolish the Ledra Street Wall along the buffer zone during a meeting last month.

“Ledra Street which has been closed off for 44 years has long symbolised the island’s division. We hope it will now come to symbolise the beginning of the island’s reunification," said C4C member Adam Demosthenous.

“We see this as part of the process of undoing the drift to separation after the division of 1974 and as a step towards reunification,” added C4C member Emine Ibrahim. “Cypriots are determined to take this further and hope that all those who want a settlement will support the two Cypriot leaders who have made this possible."

Cypriots 4 Cyprus (C4C) is a newly established network representing Cypriots of all linguistic and religious backgrounds, committed to a solution to the Cyprus problem for all Cypriots. C4C is founded on the following principles:

• Pride in our Cypriot identity

• Unity for our Cypriot homeland

• Rights for our Cypriot compatriots

• Respect for our Cypriot diversity.
