Today is the World AIDS Day.
As in the whole world, the day is being marked with special events and campaigns in the TRNC to enlighten people on the threat of AIDS.
The TRNC health ministry’s official campaign slogan for world AIDS day is ‘safe sex’.
As campaigners battle to raise awareness on World Aids Day, HIV infection is on the rise in every region of the world.
A number of messages issued by societies and non-governmental organizations in the TRNC, underlined the importance of the need to enlighten the people on the threat AIDS poses on public health, and to help boost the fight against it.
Meanwhile, a research has revealed that more than a million jobs are being lost every year from the spread of HIV/Aids; the bulk of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
The virus has had a crippling effect on the workforce of many countries, the International Labor Organization said in a report issued to coincide with the World Aids Day.
The ILO called for sustained action to improve access to antiretroviral treatments to cut mortality rates.
Without this, it estimates that the cumulative loss to the global workforce from the virus could rise by 45 million by the year 2010 and almost double again by 2020.
International Labor Organization estimates that more than 36 million people of working age are now living with the virus, the vast majority in sub-Saharan Africa.
