A Eurobarometer survey in North Cyprus has revealed that the Cyprus problem is being seen as the most important issue facing the Turkish Cypriot people.
The survey results were announced at a press conference at the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce today.
The survey was carried out in autumn by the Cyprus Communal Research and Consultation Education Center or KADEM.
According to the survey, 52% of the Turkish Cypriot people see the Cyprus issue as the most important issue facing the people.
Unemployment was listed as the second important issue facing the Turkish Cypriot people, while the economic situation as the third.
The survey reveals that 75% of the Turkish Cypriot people are satisfied with their lives and 69% of the people trust the police most; this is very similar to the EU average.
Although there has been a stable level of trust in the Turkish Cypriot people for the European Union, which was around 50% since the first time standard Eurobarometer was carried out in the North, this level went down to 45%.
According to the survey, Turkish Cypriots trust the European Parliament most.
Similarly, the level of trust for the United Nations went down from 48% to 41%.
The survey also finds that the majority of the Turkish Cypriot people thinks EU membership will have positive effects on the people; life standard and the economic issues will be more positively affected by EU membership than other issues.
It says that 38% of the Turkish Cypriot people think that the fight with unemployment should be a priority for the European Union.
43% of the people expressed their support to the European Constitution while 54% of them supports EU enlargement.
Turkish Cypriots support Turkey’s membership to the EU more than they support the membership of any other candidate country or other countries that are likely to be candidates.
The new Standard Eurobarometer – which covers 30 countries or territories – shows that public opinion for some of the main indicators of support for the European Union is now slightly less positive.
At the same time, support for further enlargement has remained stable and support for the European Constitution further improves.
