Work is still going on at, what is known as the Lokmaci Barricade, in Lefkosa to remove the footbridge, claimed by the Greek Cypriot Administration to be an obstacle in the way of opening a new gate there.
Work to dismantle the bridge started last Friday, following a decision taken by the Turkish Cypriot Side
Following a slow down of demolition work at Lokmaci because of the four-day Feast of Sacrifice and New Year celebrations, intensified work is again underway today.
The Turkish Cypriot Side’s decision to remove the bridge was announced last Friday and was welcomed by the whole international community.
However, there has been no statement from the Greek Cypriot Side yet on whether it will start preparations on its side for the opening a gate at the point for the crossing of the people from the two sides.
The Turkish Cypriot Side has been in support of the opening of a new gate in Lefkosa to improve relations between the two peoples of the island and to contribute to the efforts aimed at bringing about a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
