Source: Londra Toplum Postasi
16 November 2006

Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer will be travelling to London today, where he will hold talks with British Europe Minister Geoff Hoon about the recent Finnish proposals to save Turkey’s EU accession and meet with members of the Turkish Cypriot Community Association.

Prime Minister Soyer who will be in London from the 15th until the 21st of November will meet Europe Minister Geoff Hoon in the House of Commons on Thursday the 16th of November at 10:45am to attend a press conference. He will discuss ways to end the deadlock in Cyprus and in particular the recent Finnish proposals made EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn to prevent a ‘train crash’ in Turkish-EU accession talks. The proposal aims to find a way to open Turkish ports to Greek Cypriot air and maritime traffic while easing isolation on Northern Cyprus. Turkey has just three weeks to prevent a stalling of accession talks with the EU, while certain EU countries like Austria are calling for a pause in EU-Turkey talks.

In the evening, Prime Minister Soyer will attend a reception at the Turkish Cypriot Community Association (TCCA) in Harringay, London, which will be open to the public. The meeting will be an opportunity for members of London’s Turkish Cypriot community to raise questions to the Prime Minister. On Friday the 17th, Prime Minister Soyer will meet with members of the national and local press to answer questions regarding the Cyprus issue.

To celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Prime Minister will attend a cocktail at 7pm at the Hyatt Churchill Hotel in Marble Arch, which will be attended by members of London’s Turkish Cypriot community. In order to promote Northern Cyprus, the Prime Minister will meet with a group of British investors on Sunday, where he will talk about the opportunities and advantages of investing in Northern Cyprus. In the evening, the Prime Minister will be guest of honour at an annual dinner held at Covent Garden’s Papageno Restaurant, which is being organised by the London CTP (Republican Turkish Party), which will attended by prominent members of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Accompanied by his wife and Interior Minister Özkan Murat, and Under-Secretary to the Prime Minister Doğan Şahali, the Prime Minister will brief British journalists and meet with executive members of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber Commerce (CTCC).
