Unacceptable that GC sign agreements with neighbour countries as if it represents the whole island

29 January 2007

The Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has said it is unacceptable for the Greek Cypriot Side to sign agreements with neighbouring countries as if it represents the whole island.

Stressing that it is a right for all the peoples of Cyprus to benefit from the natural resources of the island, Mr Ercakica said a just and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem will make it easier for the two people to exercise this right.

The spokesman also added that the statements issued by Greek Cypriot officials on the use of natural resources in the sea surrounding the island proved the fact that the Greek Cypriot Administration does not want to share sovereignty with the Turkish Cypriot Side.

The Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica issued a written statement today strongly reacting to press reports that the Greek Cypriot Administration signed secret deals with some neighbouring countries to launch oil and gas explorations in the eastern Mediterranean.

Stressing that it is unacceptable for the Greek Cypriot Administration to act as if it represents the whole island and to sign deals with some countries on the use of natural resources in the sea surrounding the island, he warned that such a move will raise tensions in the region.

The spokesman said the debate that has been going on in the Greek Cypriot Side on the issue is in fact showing the Greek Cypriot Administration’s approach towards the Cyprus issue.

Stressing that it is a right for the two peoples of Cyprus to benefit from the natural resources of the island, he said a just and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem will make it easier for the two peoples to exercise this right.

But, he complained that the Greek Cypriot officials have been openly making it clear with their statements that they don’t want to share sovereignty with the Turkish Cypriot Side.

`This approach is the main reason which created the Cyprus problem and it has also been preventing a solution` he said, adding that the issue will continue to be a source of tension in the region as long as the natural resources and sovereignty over the island were not shared.

`The oil resources, which are said to have exist in the sea surrounding Cyprus, should bring peace and prosperity instead of being a reason for tension` he said.

The spokesman also noted that the Greek Cypriot Side’s unwillingness to share the island with the Turkish Cypriot people was the main reason behind the bitter experiences of the past but stressed the Turkish Cypriot Side’s determination to work towards peace and prosperity on the island.
