EU accepts Turkish Cypriot Side's claim on Cyprus Cheese

Source: BRT
07 March 2007

The European Union is reported to have warmingly welcomed the Turkish Cypriot Side’s suggestion that the Cyprus cheese should be registered under the name of "hellim" and "hellouimi" as a product unique to Cyprus.

As the Greek Cypriot Side has been trying to register the traditional Cyprus cheese under the Greek name of "halloumi", it’s been reported that the European Commission took the Turkish Cypriot Side’s objections and found a solution to the issue.

The Commission is said to have decided that the Cyprus cheese could be produced under the Turkish name of "hellim" and the Greek name of "halloumi".
