Cyprus Minister of Communications and Works Nicos Nicolaides has spoken out at Turkey's refusal to allow Cypriot aircraft to use its airspace while speaking at a meeting of the EU Transport Council. Nicolaides met on the sideline of the council meeting with European Commission Director of Air Transport Daniel Calleja. The minister, who represented Cyprus at the meeting, said that Turkey’s ongoing refusal has financial and environmental impacts, due to the additional distances the Cypriot airliners have to cover in their flights to and from the north and northeast Europe. Earlier this year, Cyprus Airways said it wanted to be compensated for damages caused by Turkey prohibiting Greek Cypriot planes from flying in its airspace. Since 1974 the national carrier has been unable to fly into skies controlled by Turkish occupation forces in northern Cyprus. It is still not clear how much compensation the airline is seeking to claim. - (KYPE)

They may not be shot out of the sky but they would not be insured and so unable to fly. Anyway, people who say "save the planet," really mean "save the human race" which in the end is doomed and is of no consequence in the grand scheme of things.

Surely this situation screams out, "Well, permit direct flights to the TRNC and we will let your passenger planes across our air space". Lem

Well, to me and all of the above posters it is obviously a matter of common sense and that is something that appears to be missing from our Southern neighbours. No concessions? it only takes one side and then the other to make concessions and then things will really start to happen. But not in my lifetime. AJ

You guys !... msg 5 - you can't fly direct to Tymbou / Ercan because of IATA rules - this follows the UN resolution on the non recognition of "TRNC". Turkey has SIGNED the Ankara Accord (part of the EU accession process) which gave ALL EU member states the right to overfly TR and for Cypriot registered shipping to visit TR ports..

Mark You may not have read my posting that was about 2 minutes prior to yours. Why do the GC's not want to make any concessions in the act of 'good will'? I am sure it would help the re-unification process but I guess you know as well as I do that the GC's are not going to give anything away. And you know what that means. AJ

So what would happen then if the u.n. relaxed the ban or havent they got the balls to make such a deision. If they did relax it would Turkey return the favour and allow certain flights in their air space i think not.Shouldnt the u.n have more clout, Paul.

Hi Paul, yes.. to the "no Direct fights" being down to the UN resolution on the not so smart move to declare "independence"... something *I* say7 has allowed the GCs to keep clobbering TCs..

More Aviation News .. Thomson has announced the development of a revolutionary long-range aircraft. The new plane will cut 10 hour flights to under a hour, and talks are at an advanced stage. The operator has revealed plans to launch "Spaircraft" - the world’s first airliner that will take holidaymakers into space and to their destination in record time. Thomson is hoping to start talks with the Football Association that could see the aircraft used by the England team for next year’s World Cup allowing the team to train in the UK on the morning of matches before flying to South Africa. Developed in secret over the last five years in partnership with Russian-based Pollof Air, the aircraft is also due to operate its first commercial holiday flights in 2010. The craft will use he unique ‘Polar Foil’ twin engine powered by a fuel composite.

Hi all i am so stupid of course the CAA wont allow it. How the hell can they allow airspace of an regonised country. It works in a vey strange wat as many of my customers that flew on a thursday night straight through from stanstead They seem to not observe the CAA regulations. You knpw I worked for BA for 12 years as Cabin crew and in all that time we never ever heard of the TRNC its so sad xxxxxxxxxxx

Loads of em, I would like to think that it would be Cypriot planes. But that would mean both sides burying the hatchet, Paul.
