| Nice one though. You go to the police in good faith. Say, "Here I am. They say, "What amnesty," and then "Oh while you're here!" You can hear the cash register ringing from here. Wait Till they do it for Job Permits and Overstays ;-) |

| hi baxi, I managed to get my car in on the back of the amnesty. What they didn't explain in the Press was that the amnesty was for people who didn't qualify under the old rules and it was designed for those who couldn't previously bring them in for various reasons. In my case, i was told that I didn't qualify under the old rules because because I have a work permit. Anyway, I paid £4700 instead of a previously quoted £13,500. It sounds crazy but it's true. | Baxi, Customs were very helpful but said that I needed approval from the Import Licence Office to say that I qualified under the new rules. I brought my car into TRNC in Feb 08 and used it until my UK tax disk expired in Oct 08 and since then it had been sitting my drive. So I thought the amnesty applied because I had kept the car too long without importing it. At the Import Licence Office I was told that I couldn't import the car under the old rules because I have a work permit but that I qualified under the new, temporary, rules. When I took the paperwork back to customs they said "You are a very lucky man!" It helps to keep your cool and not flare up when they put hurdles in your way. Also to use a 'commissioner' which is a person you pay to help get things through it customs. He charged me 200TL which was money well spent. There are different reasons for not qualifying under the old rules and I guess you have to find out what they are. Hope that help. Rich |
