Hi all, Just read that "if turkey fails to show practical support for a revived re-unification process, then Cyprus may scupper Ankaras eu bid".Idle threats or strong words.I would go with strong words.Could this be Turkeys last chance saloon, Regards, Paul.

The fact is that everybody try to use cyprus as a pawn to advance their agenda. Suppose the other countries allow cyprus to use her veto card against Turkey, will it help the Greek Cypriots in any way? The answer is a clear no and therefore the GC veto means absolutely nothing. They can stick it somewhere!!! ismet

The statement was made by foreign minister Kyprianou, who also said."It was no longer enough for Turkey to stand on the sidelines and offer its lukewarm support to the new process without making a real contribution to a workable solution" Paul.

Hi Paul I think this has come about because Erdogan has supposedly stated that Turkey has contributed a substantial amount of funds on the development of Morphou and does not want the TC's to let it go. As far as the GC's are concerned Morphou and the Karpas are theirs to reown and feels that Turkey as usual is getting in the way. This really doesn't help if the GC's are threatening Turkey. Is Turkey likley to respond in kind? I think not. At the end of the day, can Europe allow 655,000 GC's dictate the lives of 80 million Turks, a country which has far more significance to EU and US interests. Who was the mad men and women who let the GC's in to Europe before a Cyprus solution? It still seems to me that the GC's should be negotiating with Turkey directly as part of the solution. This relationship needs mending badly.

Before negotiating with the TRNC. Big pratical problems and probably unresolvable. I have not seen much evidence of GC's showing much maturity in International negotiations. Them voting against the independence of Kosovo against most of the rest of the EU is an example. If it stays bad then partition likley. Partition is what I favour smile is : then press - then press ) so colon, dash and closed bracket

Hi All I feel as a personal view that the EU need turkey as much as Turkey need them , because of Turkeys strategic position and they are a gate way into the Arab nations

Well said gary I think some forward thinking people in the EU know that we need as many countries as possible in the group. Turkey brings the borders beyond the middle east and maybe continue towards India ,then our populations and economy might be in a postition to take on the leading power China economically. Eventually America will be sidelined or become isolationist,Africa will be as it has always been, used by the others. Everbody else will be linked to one of 2 groups ,europe extend and become a eurasia and the rest far eastern/oceana.

It seems to me that the real war is for control of the mineral wealth in The Caspian Basin. Given the current antics by the Americans and the Russians that is the agenda .Afghanistan and Iran must be in the sights of both superpowers. Energy supplies to India and China, are the ultimate goals. Of equal importance is a share of the Caspian Wealth for the West. In this respect Turkey becomes of paramount importance There is in existance a pipeline from Azerbijan through Turkey pumping 1,000,000 barrels per day. I feel that Russia will court Turkey using the reluctance of the EC to accept Turkey as a full member. Turkey would make a superb buffer for Russia,at the same time isolating the states that surround and therefore control The Caspian Basin wealth. Anyone that read The Grand Chessboard by Zibnew Brazinski would have seen the evolution of this strategy 20 years ago Just my view, that is all, wyn

Reading between the lines it looks like Russia and Turkey could be about to hop into bed with each other unless the Turks dont get their own way with the E.U.The Turks have so much to offer with oil and water etc.And also the proximity of the country goes well in their favour. The Russians are really milking their spat with the Yanks and loving every minute of it.The words Cold War spring to mind, Regards, Paul.
