Just as the United Nations has created difficulties in finding a solution to the entire body of Cyprus problems, one conviction can be alleged herein with ease. When one accepts that the Cyprus problem began not in 1974 but rather in 1964 (and that is the fact of the matter), the following reality can be faced: The status of the UN peacekeeping force sent to the island to help quell the violent clashes between communities there actually presents an intractable hindrance to the solution these days. United Nations Security Council Resolution 186, adopted unanimously on March 4, 1964, was one rendered by the UN with the aim of stopping the flow of blood between communities on the island.

Bill, wow,I will re-read in the morning, and comment further.

PB we are talking thousands.

Bill,I reckon we are talking 50's when UK suddenly pulled out because of Greek EOKA killing British troops.

PB if you ever come to Cyprus,I can show you villages of Turkish villages savaged by Greek soldiers.

Schools where all the children were killed,a village where all the men were rounded up,taken to the south, and disappeared, women and children thrown into a quarry and killed.

Enough for now

Mike

History really started with the British offering indepence/Enosis

during the 2 war

which never happened

hence right /wrong bought about EOKA

in 1955

then Denktash started the TMT in 1957

from there the rest is history

Between 21 and 26 December 1963, the conflict centered in the Omorphita suburb of Nicosia, which had been an area of tension in 1958. The participants now were Greek Cypriot irregulars and Turkish Cypriot civilians and former TMT members, known as the "fighters" during the Cyprus problem, the Turkish fighters were less powerful, outnumbered and were held down in "ghettos" from the superior Greek Cypriot side who were supplied with stored EOKA guns and eventually guns from foreign powers. Many Greek and Turkish Cypriot civilians who were caught in the crossfire and chaos that ensued over the Christmas week were killed, others were massacred by Greek or Turkish irregulars and had their homes looted and burnt down in small villages as the problem developed. The government of Turkey used these events as an excuse to cancel the residence permits of 12,000 Greek citizens living in Istanbul leading to the confiscation of their property.[citation needed]

Both President Makarios and Dr. Küçük

To know the number of fatalities would not mean anything without knowing who did the killing. I watched a Greek (not Greek Cypriot) documentary (on the Greek Parliament channel) about the Greek Cypriots killed by EOKA and EOKA B. It stated that those deaths are now blamed on Turkish Cypriots or the Turkish army.

I don't know the exact quote or who said it:-

"...no Turkish Cypriot will ever forget what happened between 1963 and 1974 - and no Greek Cypriot will ever remember it".

There will always be 2 separate sets of figures for everything in Cyprus just as there are 2 separate realities.
